I would like to understand why some men choose to be drag queens but are not transgender.

No offensive replies please. As I said, it's a serious question but there is no lifestyle section to put it in.

depends what you mean by drag queen. Any male transvestite? Those who do it full time? Those who do it on stage, as in pantos? Basically, some people just like dressing up. Grayson Perry does it a lot but makes no money out of it at all, has a wife and has no wish to be a woman.

Ukrainian Andriy Danylko has played the part of an older, middle aged female rock star called Verka Serduchka for years. Danylko is not a transvestite, nor even gay, but plainly gains inspiration from the role playing.
I daresay different people have different reasons.

why on earth is it a 'bigoted question' . Its a valid enquiry, whether or not it can be answered by anyone who is not a transvestite is arguable.

I see Drag Queens as different from transvestites.

Drag Queens exaggerate their 'femininity' and are usually performers/artistes.
Transvestites explore their feminine side and are confident enough to enjoy it , only for personal satisfaction.
