Baldric - //AH @ 2259, Yes Andy you are misreading it, stop trying give it a meaning it doesn't have //
I am not trying to give it a meaning it doesn't have, I am trying to establish the meaning you gave it - please feel free to point out where I am not seeing what you mean - ?
/// The more refugees we have arriving in the UK, the more people will be taking exception to them, even if at times they do pick on the 'wrong' (as in long term resident) ones. How long will it be before we have groups of people taking exception, not just the odd one, and the refugees standing against them en-masse, there lies anarchy if we are not careful. ///
Just take the US for example, they are a perfect example why multi-racism just does not work.
Mr aog
Seems like Blue Minx got it all wrong with their lyrics didn't they?
You have posted 3 different videos concerning altercations in the last few days and it seems our guests were the only ones who don't get on.
I note reference to chinkies in the lyrics. That's not racist is it.......
//Curly Latin kinkies
Mixed with yellow Chinkees
If you lump it all together
Well, you got a recipe for a get along scene
Oh, what a beautiful dream
If it could only come true, you know, you know
What we need is a great big melting pot
Big enough to take the world and all it's got
And keep it stirring for a hundred years or more
And turn out coffee colored people by the score//
douglas - //Not sure you have a grasp of 'indigenous' there, andy //
I think I do.
The indigenous population is the native population - and at this stage of its evolution, the vast majority of the indigenous population - the established inhabitants - are rooted in immigrant stock. Which is what I meant.
If I was born in the USA, I would not assume that tracing my ancestry back four hundred years to Dutch settlers made me an immigrant.
You'll be pleased to hear it's the British Black Business awards at the Hilton tonight.
Melanie Eusebe, the founder, was on the radio this morning promoting quotas, she said, 'So my daughter doesn't have to ask why she earns less than the person next to her (fair enough, I'd say) and she can play football for Chelsea if she wants to'. Got to admit, that's where me and Mel parted company(metaphorically) That's just wrong on every level, don't you think?
I've checked with the OED, andy, and they assure me that you can't change the meaning of words then argue that you're right because it's 'what you meant'.
They did, however , say it would be okay for you to go on at great length in your explanations of usage only concede the slip in the end but not before wearing out your keyboard.

Then why do some wish to call themselves African Americans? //
I think that is a slightly different perspective - a large number of African Americans wish to acknowledge their ethnic origins in a way which Caucasian citizens do not.
