AIG,
The British police uniform known the world over is probably 30 years out of date. The modern officer looks nothing like Dixon of Dock Green. The uniform has changed substantially. Inclusion of a turban or a headscarf does not make the officer look any less like a member of the police force.
Basically, you just want a white Christian (and not gay) male to be the face of policing. The powers that be do not agree with you.
Seems an odd decision given that North Wales Police officers have the flag of Wales adorning their uniform and have done for some 4 years or more, but there's nothing like a Union Flag/Cross of St George to bring out cries and accusations of jingoistic mis-placed pride.
The RAF uniform, as I remember it, has different badges for certain personnel merely to point out their functions. Chaplains wear a cross on each lapel, aircrew have wings or brevets on their chests, there are different badges for medical staff, dental staff, musicians, RAF Regiment etc.
The Union Jack is an obvious symbol of colonial oppression. Its presentation either individually or on "state" occasionbuts a clear provocation to our most recent citizens and a threat to social cohesion.

Should France also change their flag, since they were complicit also in a little colonial oppression?

Tough, perhaps it will remind them that they have chosen to settle in the United Kingdom.

Did you never invest in the Rupert Bear pins that we bought each year in order to collect money for the widows and orphans of our murdered RUC colleagues.? We were allowed to wear them all on our ties in our unit.I built up quite a collection.
I have a cloth /velcro Thin Blue Line badge on my shooting jacket and I would imagine the controversy was not about this badge but a tie tack/pin smaller badge. It really is meant to represent the parlous state the service has become rather than the charitable view.
