This lad seems to be what every school needs...a bright, articulate pupil. What a pity that the school didn't recognise that.

Complete over-reaction by the school. Agree that it is their loss.

I've heard of an alarm clock but never an alarm timepiece.
JD,, I told you I was being "strictly pedantic". It's one of those definitions that we all ignore.
"A clock is an instrument to indicate, keep, and co-ordinate time. The word clock is derived ultimately (via Dutch, Northern French, and Medieval Latin) from the Celtic words clagan and clocca meaning "bell". A silent instrument missing such a striking mechanism has traditionally been known as a timepiece.[1] In general usage today a "clock" refers to any device for measuring and displaying the time. Watches and other timepieces that can be carried on one's person are often distinguished from clocks.[2]"

It's still a watch, divebody.
Interesting. I thought that they were synonyms, the term timepiece being archaic. More interesting is the origin of the word 'watch' for a portable timepiece.

In real life JD, I guess they are synonyms aren't they. Special areas of interest always have their own word usages.
You're welcome, diver.
It is now over 13 mins. since I tried to type a contribution to this thread. I am completely, totally, fed up of the computer age. IT DOESN'T WORK. Can you enthusiasts give any justification at all for the blooming internet? (Taken about another 5 mins to type this - goodness knows how long it will take for me to get it registered!)
Well, jourdain2, we are talking about time aren't we?:)
^^^^ Sorry! I just got so frustrated. Please forgive. ;0
Are you by any chance using Internet Explorer, Jourdaindeux?
Yes, Jackdaw. At least, I think so. I am in the middle of a muddle at the moment because we arrived here and simply had to have a phone, so signed up to BT. This has proved prohibitively expensive so we seized on the recent opportunity to change (going to SSE). I honestly don't know the first thing about all this and I've never had any help with all this stuff.

There's something called 'Outlook Express' or something like that, which button I press? Too late tonight. ~Thanks for asking, I'm just lost in all this lot. :) x

jourdain2...download CHROME...its free and its the browser I always use for AB.
Overreactions all round, I think. The "clock" does not look like a clock at all. The teacher apparently thought it was a hoax bomb, not a real bomb, so she didn't really feel there was a threat to the lives of the other children.
He shouldn't have been handcuffed. He also should not be invited to meet UN officials or go to the White House.
According to the "rags" out here the first person at school he showed his "clock" to was his "Design and Technology" teacher who commended him for his efforts.

Then it all went belly up.
/// Why is the UN involved, why is he going to the white house, would all this happen to a child that isn't
Muslim? ///

One could say, would this thread have been posted, if the lad had not been a Muslim?
Peter Pedant

/// yeah it is for chrissakes what sort of skool did you go to DB ?. ///

Obviously not the same one that you went to.

AOG...Would this kid have been arrested and handcuffed if he hadn't been Muslim, is a much more relevant question !

By the way Clover....he has been invited to the White House by President Obama...seems like a good reason to go to me !

We will never know that.
Another relevant question...If this kid is so smart why did he allow the alarm to go of during a lesson?

Another one...If you found this 'clock' on a train would you (like Obama) think

Cool Clock?
Nobody with an ounce of common sense would fall for clock-boy's story.
