is ema based on household income? my friends parents are divorced and she is looked after by her father. her mother is in a new relationship so does her mothers income count towards the household income or not?

EMA is assessed solely on the household income of the parent the student lives with. Your friend's mother's income will therefore be ignored if she no longer lives in the household. Any maintenance she might pay is also ignored.
