It was generally assumed that human evil came to an end in 1945 with the defeat of Nazi Germany. Sadly this proved not to be the case; witness the rise of the Khmer Rouge in the 70s and now this lot. It makes me wonder whether those who prophesy the Second Coming are right after all; I see no end to it otherwise.
No, the IS goal is not publicity; there can't be many who do not already know who they are and what they do.
The goal is clearly to trigger reflex hate in *us*. The gossip in every workplace will be a re-run of everything posted in this thread (nukes were shockingly high up my wishlist but Saharan sand reaches our shores and we don't want fallout circling the globe and landing here too). When your (so far peace-loving) Muslim colleagues overhear your reflex punishment catalogue that could be perceived as aimed at them.
That's what's doing all the recruitment for IS - day to day contact with people like YOU, when they've driven you into revenge mode.
Goading your opponent into leaving secure ground, to fight on the ground they know best, is documented from 500BCE. Getting us to perpetrate atrocities on their level gives them a twisted sense of the moral high ground as well, enhancing their recruitment still further.
You can't win by love-bombing them either.

I can't help but get the impression they want to make it so repellant that, if forced to convert at swordpoint, so to speak, we'd all happily choose death.
I know I would.
It's the way they will clean their conscience of all the killing they'd have to do, as it's all there in the book. The perverted motivation can only be guessed at, other than the basic human desire to change your surroundings to the way you want it.

It seems pretty clear that IS use religious fundamentalism as a recruiting drive but that the organisation itself is to say the least not made up entirely of religious fundamentalists.

If you asked me which single country has the military expertise, equipment and sheer bloody-minded nastiness to sort out IS, I'd come straight back with one very obvious answer -

The US needs to tell the Saudis that unless they sort it themselves (vanishingly unlikely as they are a bunch of hypocritical fellow travellers of IS), the Israelis will be bankrolled and armed to the teeth and told "go get 'em".

I did at first naomi, now I've changed my mind.... these people have gone beyond religion...I heard a 16 year girl on the today programme a few weeks ago. They asked her how she felt about members of her religion carry out be-headings...She said " don't you dare call them muslim's, they are psychopaths" I believe she's correct
