I am rather surprised this has not been discussed.
Bristol is implementing two smoke free zones. I feel this is just going a bit too far. What next fat people free zones, or poor people free zones etc.

there are plenty of smoke free zones already aren't there? They're called pubs. What's the new plan?

They should name it 'Taser Square' anyone who lights up there 'gets it'
Until the Governement bans the sale of tobacco altogether no-one should dictate what smokers should do. There are be designated areas for smokers who are working or attending matters in a building. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with smoking outdoors as long as it's not offending other people, young children etc. Smokers pay enough for their pleasure they have rights too.
"This is an exciting initiative..."

Never been more excited... (yawn)"
Bristol is such an ugly sprawl this is just one more good reason not to go there.
I understand from today's papers, that these zones are voluntary. It will be interesting to see what the response is amongst smokers. Personally I think its worth a trial to see if it works.

I used to like sitting outside a country Pub in the summer, having lunch and enjoying the fresh air. But now so many Beer Gardens just reek of fag ends and cigarette smoke.
I can't be doing with all this self righteous faffing....I think they should just take us out somewhere and shoot us....quietly of course...and with non smoking guns......x
Being fat or poor doesn't directly affect other people's health.

Yes secondhand smoke can be damaging(risky) but when outside I can only imagine this as minimal. This argument does make me smile when you read about what is quite legitamately put in our food.
Again. The food you choose to eat and any health issues is just that, your choice. Not the effects of someone else's choice.
Not unless you are mugged by some poor fat *** Zacs.

Not when your a child or when you are not told the whole truth by rather suspicious terms.
It's hardly a new idea. Bournemouth has had smoke-free beaches for years. Blackpool has smoke-free parks. Stoke-on-Trent is to follow suit.
Dodgy food additives can be avoided. Second hand cancer causing smoke cannot.
Any attempt to restrict poisonous drugs (e.g. heroin, cocaine, nicotine, alcohol) is to be commended. Unfortunately enforcement is impossible (e.g. Prohibition).
Well, children in pushchairs are far too close to car exhausts so I think we should ban cars.....x
... and before anyone raises the issue, there are plenty of examples of all these indulgences harming those other than the voluntary participants.
Is there a legally enforceable penalty for lighting up in these zones?
