With a record like this, why has it not been banned, well we know the reason don't we?

*** Since the carnival did not have local authority permission, initial police involvement was aimed at preventing it taking place at all, which resulted in regular confrontation and riots. ***

/// Scotland Yard staged a series of dawn raids on Tuesday linked to this weekend's Notting Hill carnival in west London. Weapons including two machine guns and a handgun, crack cocaine and about £70,000 in cash were seized, and 88 people were arrested. ///

/// Ch Supt Robyn Williams said: "We are committed to ensuring that Notting Hill carnival remains a safe, vibrant and enjoyable event. ///

Why wait until just before this Carnival, the police should be raiding these premises on a regular basis throughout the year?

jno and getting food poisoning for their trouble. Street food is openly sold without food hygiene inspectors being allowed to inspect the poor standards being used. Booze is sold on the streets at extortionate prices from ad hoc stalls. No excise licence needed at Carnival for these hawkers who are breaking the law. Police instructed to ignore use and sale...

You can't have everything I did ignore Gay Pride this year.

I don't think it's a matter of putting up with murders and physical attacks during the NHC. Is it not more likely that as with football hooligans, we should not allow a small minority to dictate (through their violent behaviour), the opportunities opened to the majority.

When football hooligans were rampaging through the terraces for a quarter of a century, I don't recall many saying that Premier League matches should be banned.

...even those who had an agenda didn't come up with that one.
why is there guns and drugs at a carnival? We have a WI cake stall and the Brownies doing country dancing at ours.
you don't want to be around when them brownies 'kick off', mind.

When are you going to excuse the murder and rampage that is yearly attached to this event by comparing it to much less serious crowd violence shown at some football events.

At least football clubs do have to answer for their crowd violence as they can be made to play some matches to empty stands, they can be banned from playing in Europe for example, and they can also be fined large sums of money.

Whereas this carnival goes unchecked year after year no matter who is murdered etc.etc.

"rampage" lol.

When are you going to realise that you're talking to someone who has been to the NHC for twenty five years, and is in a better position than you to describe what it's like?

You write as if it's a murdering free-for-all every year.

Please tell me the years that you went to the carnival, and what your experiences were.
Also, why are you downplaying football violence?

What would you say to all those who have been glassed and noww spend their lives with hideous scars on their faces?

What would you say to those families who were terrified to go into town on match days for fear of being caught up in rival gangs fights?

Do you not condemn foootball violence?

If not, why not?
Well, aog has been an apologist for the EDL in the past. This is taken from their Wikipedia page:

"The EDL evolved from the football casual subculture and is loosely organised around figures in hooligan firms. There is no formal membership, and EDL membership figures are not clear. The think tank Demos estimated that there were between 25,000 and 35,000 active members in 2011."

I'm sure that AOG's antipathy to the NHC is nothing to do with race (he will be able to defend himself on that).

The fact that he calls for it to be banned each year, I'm guessing, is more to do with safety fears. If anything, that suggests that AOG wants to protect black people from harm.

And that's laudable.
If it's any consolation I do condemn football violence, sp. In fact I condemn football played in front of large crowds totally. With the media platforms available now there is no need for local residents to be confined to their homes every other week whilst 50,000 people flood into their area. There should be a limit of about 1,000 spectators at football matches. Either that or they should be played behind closed doors. They should not be broadcast live in pubs. Those wanting to follow the game can do so from the comfort of their own homes, leaving everybody else in peace.
Also, I assume that the low numbers of arrests and lack of any serious crime in the past few years may have allayed some of AOG's fears.

It's a pity we haven't heard him praise the police in this thread. I think they are doing a marvellous job as these arrests attest.

Still, odd though, isn't it? AOG seems to be calling for a ban on the NHC because of successful police raids.

I'm not sure that many share that rather unique thought process.

There have been murders and stabbing, even you cannot deny that fact, even one is one too many, it could be you or your closest the next time.

/// Please tell me the years that you went to the carnival, and what your experiences were. ///

You tell me since you already seem to know that you have been more times than myself and that consequently you are in a better position than me to describe what it is like.
Late into this 'debate' but if everyone is aware of the dangers and still attend, why should it be banned?

Simply because I haven't posted a thread on football violence at this time, it was yourself who introduced it as a smoke screen to somehow cover up the violence at this carnival for some very strange reason.

But if football violence concerns you so much, (which obviously it does since you are wiling to take it up as a weapon in defence of the NHC) then why don't you wait until there is some shown on the news and then enter a thread about it, then maybe we can then join in a debate over that subject?

Thank you for that link SeaJayPea, this extract make interesting reading, seem most topical today, it is a pity someone isn't now doing the same to stop those who are now going to Iraq and beheading people.

'Tommy Robinson' recalled that he had been prompted to found the organization after he had read in a newspaper about a group of local Islamists attempting to recruit men outside a local bakery in Luton to fight for the Taliban in Afghanistan: "I was like, they can't do that! In working class communities, we all know somebody in the armed forces. I've got a mate who lost his legs. And these lot were sending people to kill our boys."

/// Because its generally carried out by white anglo saxons where as the NHC is errrmm well you know not!! ///

That is complete racism on your part, it has nothing to do with colour it is all about bringing an alien culture to our streets.

As someone referred to previously we have a strong tradition of carnivals in the villages and towns of England, but the most violence one will witness at these events, are groups of men dressed in funny clothes with bells on, banging short poles of wood against each other's.
