Well the 'Children's Day' part, gets the Notting Hill Carnival off to a good start.

Only 53 arrests for a variety of offences including drugs possession, public order, theft, criminal damage, robbery and assault, with more than 5,500 police officers being deployed.

Puts a typical banned EDL protest into insignificance, it would seem.

Nice of those 53 numbnuts to converge in one place today. Saves a lot of resources.

Well I guess ANY event attracting hundreds of thousands of people would have a huge police presence after the recent riots/looting.

And 53 arrests is a low number for such a huge crowd. Again I guess any event of that size you would expect 50 or so arrests.

So pretty much a non-story really.
I think when you've got an estimated million people over 2 days 53 arrests is a minor miracle

400 EDL people attended this rally and there were 31 arrests

so nice try but total rubbish
Yeah!.....bit of a "damp squib"non-story - n.b. AOG -must try harder!!
1 million will see the carnival. Divide that by 5,500 and you get one police officer for every 180 attendees. Which is comparable to policing at football matches that happen EVERY weekend, 43 weeks a year.

At an EDL event, you would get a similar number of arrests for less than 500 marchers. And the EDL do not attract hundreds of thousands of tourists.

But you should save your indignation for the Olympics. The policing of that will be a month of Notting Hill Carnivals and will cost a fortune.

aog, do you never have a day off?

Maybe he is paid by the Daily Mail to promote it?
I would say that's a minor miracle considering how many people attend over the two days.
Have any of the newspapers mentioned a female police officer being slashed with an ‘edged weapon’ below the body armour in the stomach area, (superficial wound).
Just slightly more than Henley regatta - 45 there....

go down to Notting Hill old git - and cop a lungful of the "erb - might help
you see things,differently ! :0)
just got back and everyone there seemed to be having a good time. It's not as good as it used to be in the good old days, of course, before the steel bands were replaced by sound systems that make my chest hurt. But I was not robbed, raped or killed, and any herbal intake was involuntary (though hard to avoid).
JTP - haven't seen the papers today. 53 arrests! Pretty good news.

No doubt the usual pathetic bigots will be trying to spin their racist rubbish out of these figures.

Wish they would just shut up and go to the bingo or something.
Hear, hear, sp - it's a fabulous cultural event attended by thousands. If a few people bent on causing trouble do so, wll, they got caught. Good.
I'm still trying to work out how they can cancel a top football match at Tottenham where they get few coloured supporters but allow the Notting hill Carnival which is predominantly a black affair.
Because Tottenham is where riots were taking place, and the match was the next day - this Carnival is two weeks later when things are calming down.
We had our Chapeltown Carnival today it was said to be a success, everyone enjoyed themselves the costumes were really good considering that the warehouse was damaged by fire earlier last month. Don't know of any arrests I'm sure the police will have lifted the obligatory druggie as it is the place to be for them.
There would have been a riot if it had been cancelled without giving some notice. It should have been cancelled 2 weeks ago!
Rov1100

It has passed off very peacefully, an hundreds of thousands have a had a good day out.

Why should it have been banned two weeks ago??
