The systematic vandelism of our railways started by Beeching, is a travesty. Regular readers will know I hate nationalisation but in the case of a few things, rail included, the whole thing needs to be public. I don't mean go back to the bad old days of union barons and ovmanned with looneys who strike every five minutes but run properly and yes, subsidise it. Every nation should have a clean cheap proper railway system. Personally I'd restore our system to it's pre Beeching glory. Anyway well done Labour credit where it's due.

The West Somerset Railway (WSR) is a 22.75-mile (36.6 km) heritage railway line in Somerset, England. The freehold of the track and stations is owned by Somerset County Council; the railway is leased to and operated by West Somerset Railway plc (WSR plc); which is supported and minority owned by charitable trust the West Somerset Railway Association (WSRA). The WSR plc operates services using both heritage steam and diesel trains.
It relies on lots of volunteers. I spent a week in Watchet over the New Year last Dec/Jan, and the track ran behind the cottage I was renting. The steam trains were running every half hour and the noise and the smell took me straight back to the 60's. I used to live in Watchet and went to Minehead by train everyday to school, although they were diesels then of course !

By the way inksplotter, the diesel trains have a very loyal following as well, so its not all about steam. But that noise and the smell of the coal......... !
Minehead is the place to go to see it all happening. They have a Winter Steaming Festival every year, over Xmas and New Year and all their steam locos are used. Minehead Station probably has more steam whooshing about than anywhere else at that time of year ! There is a man-powered turntable there as well.
