when starting the terrano...if i turn the key quickly ...the car wont start it just clicks.
If i turn the key slowly it starts ok.... what causes this ?

With most vehicles today it's always a good idea to turn the ignition key to the 'on' position and wait a couple of seconds to let all the warning lights 'do their thing.' Diesel-powered vehicles also benefit from the slight delay (allows the glowplugs to reach max). True, there could be an ignition key/mechanism fault with your Terrano ... I'm not familiar with the actual vehicle, we don't have them in South Africa ... hope the above helps ...
All modern cars have some security device so that they can only be started by the correct key.

I suspect your car has some delay in recognising the key.

Don`t think your right Hopkirk....starts first time if you turn the key slowly...to explain better...i put ignition on first which puts glow plugs on then turn again to start.
meltdown, check the electrical contacts on the ignition barrel and make sure that they are clean and any connectors to it are secure.
