I suspect this bunch wont stop until cars are banned (or have the red flag law reinstated)

I serioulsy doubt the poll and would love to know the actual question asked.

Having said that I am an advocate of the 20mph limit near schools and playgrounds. We have one outside our house as I am just a couple of doors up from a school. The problem is that it is never enforced, cars park all over the yellow lines and restricted parking and where are plod ?

So maybe enforce what we have before spreading this.

More enforcement of the existing road rules is what we need. Speed bumps just don't do it for some. Reducing the limit to 20mph would mean nothing if not enforced.
More cameras on traffic lights too, to stop those who jump red lights and cause accidents.
Blimey when I read your headline i thought that the Left had finally took over.

No its ok AOG, just time for you to dig out that red flag for your vehicle !
Most housing estates in Ipswich are subject to a 20mph speed limit, as is the whole of the town centre. All of the estates in my own small town are as well. I've never met a single person who objects to those speed limits but I know many people who approve of them.
I don't believe it, there is a place for 20mph limits but not bleedin everywhere that is currently 30, madness. I agree YMB this will be a leading question:

"Would you Not like to kill and maim small children by not allowing drivers over 20mph in a built up area?"

Perhaps you should get out a bit more then Buen!

Are your 20mph limits enforced or is it 'down to the individual' ?

It would be interesting to know what percentage of the 'Overwhelming majority' were Drivers!
It seems mighty slow for a default limit. Try driving at under 20 for any significant distance. It feels ridiculous. If speed's a bad thing, why don't they make it 10 or even 5? surely that would be better still.

The limits are partly self-regulated by 'speed tables' and similar traffic enforcement measures but the police do seem to be quite active in enforcing them on the estates in Ipswich. Most people on my estate stick to them (partly, again, because of speed tables) but the police do occasionally use unmarked police cars to stop speeding vehicles. (I know that because they usually get pulled up directly opposite my house!).
It's 20 round here but no police to enforce it. A sensible driver would barely go above 20 before they came to the next speed hump anyway.
ymb - is parking not a council issue where you live? We were told when we complained about people parking on yellow lines causing an obstruction that we needed to contact the council as they enforce parking regulations - mind you it could be different in Wales

You mean they posed a question that was incomprehensible?

Could be Weshyorkie.

As for speed humps I still wonder how they get away wit these. Some are rediculous and force you much slower thant the raod speed that seem dubious legally. If they want a lower speed then legislate or whatever they do no back door it. In addition some are so severe smal cars like my daughters KA end up with new sterring parts every year. bloke in the garage says marked increase since road humps introduced. And some are far too high, the wifes SLK's skits/spoiler is very very close so we end up doing around 2 mph much to the annoyance of other road users. But not our fault, as I shout to them. My L200 though has no problem!

Very probably Roy. That is the point TTT is making !
Definatly should be 20 around schools, shops and residential areas. But most important it should be vigourously enforced as should the current 30 limit.
The 30 limit past my house is ignored by many with cars doing up to 60 mph there have been several accidents but I have NEVER seen a police officer with a speed camera or seen anyone stopped for speeding.
// I have NEVER seen a police officer with a speed camera or seen anyone stopped for speeding. //

They have favourite places where they like to go and sit.
If your house isn't near one of those, tough.
20mph = 3rd gear = more pollution.
I wish they would educate children in the green cross code more, the amount of times I see kids flying out into the road on bikes or crossing roads with out looking is scary. A gang of kids near me play a game were they sit in the middle of a residential road and hurl verbal abuse at cars who want to get past each summer.
The council are introducing 20mph limits on the whole town in which I live shortly. During the consultation phase, residents were encouraged to contact the council with any queries. When I asked for a link to the local road accidents stats 3 weeks before the meetings, they decided to reply after the consultation. I have never known of any road accidents involving pedestrians in the area they want to change the limit, in the 7 years that I have lived here.
I agree to having 20 mph (or even less) around schools, but people should take more care and responsibility of their dependants as pedestrians also.
ymb...have you reported the situation outside the school ? Take some license plate numbers and photos and inform the police officially, ie by recorded delivery. If you haven't heard anything concrete in a week or so, copy the letter to the Chief Constable the local newspaper and your local MP.

That is what I and some neighbours did last year and it has done wonders.
aog...not just yet !
