I'd agree that quotas aren't the ideal solution -- but a company that claims to appoint its staff solely on merit of qualifications and experience, but is then staffed entirely white middle-class men ought to raise more than a few eyebrows, no? Either you could imagine that the company is not telling the truth and there is some latent racism going on there, or they are being entirely honest in which case presumably every other social group is being let down at another point in the system.
In either case, you don't really want to see such a company, and it should surely be taken as a bad sign if a company's ethnic/ gender mix isn't reflective of the population.
