...that were predicted to be swamping our streets from January 1st onwards?

Not being funny...but where the hell are they? And why have the press gone all quiet on the story?

Does anyone feel concerned that we are now living in an age where papers can print wholly false stories, without checks and balances?

Is this an unforeseen product of the Internet age? With so much unverified information flooding our phones, tablets, PCs and other devices, do we just take everything with a pinch of salt now?

I'm sure The Dirty Digger is Private Eye's moniker for one Rupert Murdoch.
Naomi...I make no apologies for being a Labour supporter, neither do I expect you to apologise for being supporter of any other Party. We are entitled to our views and I intend to continue to comment on the DM's articles.

The DM spreads fear amongst us by exploiting the xenophobia that exists in some people. I repeat, on this occasion, they got it wrong. We are not over-run by people from Bulgaria or Romania. But it won't stop the DM from trying again, especially in the run up to the next General Election.
Douglas...you are correct....it is Murdoch, the one who used to own the NOTW. The very same newspaper, whose former staff are fighting for their liberty in court at the present time.
It was classic scaremongering.

Based on a little bit of fact - last time assession countries got full membership, we got millions of Polish immigrants.

But that was when we were booming. For the last four years our economy has been stagnant and the jobs haven't been available.

It was always a prediction because nobody knew whether the Romanians and Bulgarians would come for sure. There were good reason why history would not repeat itself but the right wing papers ignored that. Just the mere possibility that it could happen fitted their anti EU agender, so they spun a scare story for a year which turned out to be nonsense.

People have always believed their Governments and the media when they haven't been telling the truth. In the internet age, it is much easier for us to find the truth ourselves if we can be bothered. But when we want to believe the lie, most will not seek out the truth.
Mikey, I’m not asking for apologies - but a little respite would be refreshing.
One would imagine they're still in the queue........:

A respite from me but not you apparently naomi....how does that work ?

I was addressing the original post by sp1814. Why should I show restraint ?
Sp, I suggest you read Flat Earth News by Nick Davies for a clear exposition of how such "news" stories are created and disseminated.
Basically, yes, we ARE "living in an age where papers can print wholly false stories, without checks and balances." (And that means any of the papers!)

Ha ha...I'm one ahead!

I'm currently reading two books on my iPad - Stephen King's 'Under The Dome' (pretty good) and 'Flat Earth News'.

One is scary, and the other is terrifying!

Once again, this isn't a thread specifically about one news source, but how we've got into a position where blatantly fake stories can be released and take on a life of their own. For instance, it was reported that demand for flights to the UK were going for £3,000 such was the demand. Yes - but only if you took a ridiculous route from Bulgaria. There were plenty of available seats on direct flights for £160!!!
Mikey, nice try but it doesn't work. You're obsessed.
Naomi

The Daily Mail long propogated a myth, often repeated on here, that Labour had an open door immigration policy. They didn't. It also promotes the anti EU agenda, which this scare story typifies.

So to the avid recipients of Daily Mail propaganda, a vote for Labour is a vote for unrestricted immigration from the EU. And a vote for the Conservatives will produce a referendum on getting us out of the EU (don't hold your breath on that ladt bit).
I'm not.
I am committed to the cause of having a Labour Government as from May 2015...call it obsessed if you like, but I shall still carry on, with or without your permission !
And neither am I the only one to see through the xenophobic DM, as you can see by reading other peoples post on here. But I notice its only me that you have a go at naomi ? Now who is obsessed ?
Mikey, no obsession on my part. Your constant ramblings about the Labour party are wearing, that's all. They permeate practically every thread you're involved in. If anyone else did it, I'd say the same to them - but they don't.
mikey,

It will be very easy for the next Government (if it is Labour) to do a better job than the Coalition has done.

But I hope you are not expecting great things because I fear you will be vastly disappointed. Not very much was achieved in the 13 years of Blair/Brown rule. Miliband and Balls are a weaker proposition.
as far as I can see mikey and naomi are mirror images: he is totally in favour, she is totally anti and has often said she will never never vote for them again. Any accusations of obsession must apply equally to both - and they add nothing whatever to the debate except name-calling.
/// I repeat, on this occasion, they got it wrong. We are not over-run by people from Bulgaria or Romania. But it won't stop the DM from trying again, especially in the run up to the next General Election. ///

And I also repeat Labour got it wrong and we were overrun by immigrants from Eastern Europe. But with Labour's record on immigration it can only get worse if so help us, they get back in power, call me xenophobic if you like, it is only a word that the left like to call anyone who disagrees with them over mass immigration.

This from a House of Commons debate which took place on Thursday 19 December 2013

/// Nigel Mills: I think there is general agreement that the level of migration over the past decade was clearly higher than the country could cope with. Members of the previous Government are now recognising that they made mistakes, especially relating to the accession of the A8 countries a decade ago. It is worth reminding ourselves that 5,000 to 13,000 people a year were predicted to come from those countries, and more than 1 million actually came. That was a spectacularly bad prediction. ///
