Can't believe the school incident hasn't been discussed here!
Does anyone feel the teacher should be sacked for doing this?
I can't help thinking it was a last resort to carry out this foul deed! I suppose she could have gone to the headmaster, but if think she should keep her job.

In the current climate of no-one can punish my child, what sanctions are considered acceptable? I've encountered parents who would not allow their child to be disciplined, no lines, detentions, even at break etc etc and complaints if a voice was raised above what the brat thought acceptable. Some parents need to get into schools and see what disruption...

While i do agree with the comments that this teacher obviously had some sort of moment and made a bad decision, I am surprised that no-one has thought to see what is happening in the school.
I will bet my hat (if i had one) that there is a small number of kids in the class maybe even just one that it continuously disruptive and is often sent to the head or put in isolation (the trendy new punshiment).
I feel that perhaps the teacher could probably have done with a little more support from the faculty before this incident and it may never have occured.
Having worked in a school I have seen teachers in departments support each other when a kid kicks off in class. Has this happened here, did she feel so isolated that she couldn't deal with it?

It also done them no good and it didn't change their behaviour!
If a teacher had done that to my kids I would certainly be shouting it from the roof tops to ensure the teacher was dismissed and to make sure the school took it very seriously and to discourage others from doing similar things. If you cant do your job without resorting to such techniques then you are in the wrong job.

1. She shouldn't have done it - and may well lose her career for a moment of madness.
2. The parents have probably done more damage to their kids by exposing them to the Vultures of the Tabloid Press than the original incident did. The whole thing will have distorted the children's self-importance and increased their feelings of inviolablilty.
I suspect the real problem is the ever decreasing number of (largely ineffective) sanctions that teachers and schools have to enable them to enforce discipline and good behaviour.
Couple that with the prevailing "my child is always right" attitude from many parents (often the ones whose children least deserve such a blanket endorsement) and you have a recipe for escalating problems.
