Actions that seem common enough on both sides of the house, ymb. This is part of the problem with the existing donation and funding system of the political parties - that you will get individual or corporate donors making large donations to the political party of their choice, and one cannot help but think that there is some sort of quid pro quo for doing this; Influence, invitations to policy-making committees, lucrative outsourcing work etc.

It is truly staggering how someone of Mr. Flowers rather scandal-laden background made it to become Chair of a major bank and you have to question whether some sort of political favouritism was at work.

seems they didn't have to try too hard - which may leave mr miliband little option but to invoke the "shaggy defence"

Judging by the expenses he has supposedly wrongfully claimed in the past (£150,000 was mentioned) he must have a champagne lifestyle, so, yes, he appears to be a champagne socialist.

But this more to do with the Co-Op than the Labour Party. They insist upon recruiting from within, so when the job of their top banker comes up, they choose someone in the organisation who appears most suited. That he never passed the bankers' exams and only worked in one for four years from the age of nineteen, which is when he attempted the exams, did not affect that judgment or practice.

Mr Flower's highest rank in the Labour Party was a local Councillor. There are 7,000 Labour Councillors in UK.

I doubt that loans of over £1 million were nodded through on the say so of one man. The Cooperative has long sponsored the Labour party, some MPs are even elected under a Co-opertative banner. The loans may be very favourable, but unlikely to be all Flowers' doing.

LG - I agree with you there. This seems to be a story that crops up a few times a decade. Was is Bernie Eccleston who donated £1million to New Labour in the 90s and then suddenly Formula One was exempt from tobacco advertising?

I'm sure the Conservatives and LibDems aren't squeaky clean either...
