Actually, it is my understanding that catholic doctrine still holds to the view that abortion is never morally acceptable, for any reason, even if the mother's life is imperilled by the pregnancy. So actually one might consider that the secular authorities of El Salvador and other like minded countries on this issue - which incidentally includes the Holy See - are carrying out the Catholic Churches teachings most faithfully.

I would be interested to hear from catholics or those knowledgeable about catholic doctrine whether this is a correct interpretation or not...
