I applaud the international community in trying to tackle the situation in Syria, but I really don't know if it is going to be terribly successful when Assad is in complete denial.

According to this interview the UN Team didn't find any evidence that he or anyone else actually used chemical weapons, but instead some one, probably the opposition "planted" evidence, in an attempt at fraud. He thought that all those videos of dead people and all those people being treated for serious health conditions by Doctors were fake. In addition he seemed to deny that Syria is the grip of a civil war !

Talking of grip, has this man lost his grip on reality completely ? How are we to deal with such an out and out fantasist and liar ?

The same as we did with the war criminal Blair.
"How are we to deal with such an out and out fantasist and liar ?"
we are not, we are staying right out of it. I hope that does not change.
Oh come on Gromit you're far too intelligent than to make a daft comment like that :-)
I don't think Assad is in denial. He's simply a liar like his mentor and fellow war criminal in the Kremlin.
Probably quite a happy one at the moment too, as the so-called 'agreement' over chemical weapons disposal apparently buys him lots of time to carry on before with his more conventional forms of murder.
When I hear Mr Ryabjov dismissing the UN report as biased I'm reminded of a criminal criticising the police somehow. And this from a country that claimed to want the UN to be given more respect ...
The whole lot is a rotten pear, it's a civil war, both sides are barbarians.
Assad is just trying to give Putin some credibility for defending him ( in Putin's interest). He could hardly say anything else. I think it is that simple. If Assad 'fessed up' there would be no reason for Putin to prevent Uncle Sam from bombing his military resources leading to 'Game Over'.
TTT, that's a bit harsh .....on barbarians.
Surely the weakness in this agreement is that Assad cannot be trusted to declare all of his chemical weapons stash .
Well we dont actually know what happened. either side could easily have done it. There certainly seemed to be a case for the Rebels doing it since they were all set to 'go in' when the Septics started lobbing missiles in (Obviously no one has told them how dangerous it is to be near the Yanks and missile/bullets etc even if your on the same side).

As for believing it is in civil war, I would imagine most in his position would have to believe they were winning and it was just small incursions or what would be the poitn of continuing?

As TTT pints out both sides aer as bad as each other, no winnners here certainly from the West's pint of view.
Jom 'Game over' Hardly, if the rebels do oust him then watch for the real bloodbath as the various factions within the rebels fight for control, and lets not forget all the Jihadists in there.
We know there are Chemical weapons in Syria because we sold them.

Instead of UN inspections, wouldn't it be easier to look who we invoiced?.
Youngmaf, perhaps I wasn't clear, I meant game over for Assad. The 'games' in the middle east will only end when Israel gets backed into a corner an pushes the button.
"Well we dont actually know what happened. either side could easily have done it."

Either side couldn't have done it. Only the government forces possess the artillery capability to fire the shells a significant distance and in significant numbers.
