So Patrick Mercer is resigning the Tory Party whip before Panorama exposes his misdemeanors

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22727815

Ironic since he once said:

he had seen "a lot of ethnic minority soldiers who were idle and useless, but who used racism as cover for their misdemeanours."

Presumably as opposed to him using his position as an MP as a cover for his!

More interestingly he once said that being called a "black b@stard" was part of life in the armed forces.

Do people think that's acceptable today?

If they do would it be equally acceptable for a black NCO to refer to a wite soldier in the reverse?

Are racist comments acceptable in the Army now or in Mercer's departure are we seeing the the death of a dinosaur?

It's not just black people that are on the end of derogatory comments.
Well....the word b@stard is commonly used mainly among men, in the services, football matches, spectators and players alike.

Does the adjective "black" make it any worse?

Not for me....a ba'sratd is a b@stard is a b@stard.

Black NCO calling a white (sp) soldier.....a white [email protected] as above.
So...

if it is ok in certain circumstances to address a blind person as:

'You b@stard'

Is it no worse then to address them as?:

'You blind b@stard'

Or does adding the qualifier imply that they belong to an even more despised group than simply 'b@stards'?

"Does the adjective "black" make it any worse? "

Surely it makes it race related? When did anyone ever get called a white .....?
maybe not race but I have heard insults with the prefix "you ginger" " you fat" "you bald"
like ummm says other people are affected by these comments
I've been called an Irish C***. Does that count?
In the townships of Sowetto I wouldn't be surprised mattk.
"thick paddy" is another
yep, been called that too.
Fancy taking money from a lobbyist.
He ought to know that's a Labour perk.
Welsh bastard; English bastard; AB bastard.........All of a muchness.

Al.
Alston.......LOL
How about...."Pommy b'stard?"

Does that upset the Brits?
A lot depends in which context the remarks are made.During my time in the army it was quite common to hear such phrases as "Black bast'rd" usually said in a jocular manner asand usually taken in good part as was the phrase "white honky".In those days many things were said which today would probably not be accepted.
It's downright rude to call someone a bastard fullstop!
Am I the only bastard in AB who correctly spells the word.

Al.
Ohhhhhhhh Helen, you're in for a shock :-D
Er no Alston I spelt it correctly!
Why Ummmm?
