I remember watching the sailing at the Olympics and thinking this is a tough old sport.

Very sad indeed Em. x
It certainly can be tough. We don't race, we now only sail for pleasure rather than competition and the sailng game is still relatively new to me (6 years) as opposed to the Captain who has sailed for 36 years. But we have had some hairy moments in Force 9 gales and the Captain's tales of sailing the Fastnet and the Atlantic are enough to make my hair stand on end.

A sad story, and it must have been very frightening even for a seasoned sailor.
Yes very tragic and I am sure all our thoughts go out to his family.

Having watched this on the news I was amazed how flimsy and unstable the vessel seemed to be, I am no sailor but it seemed that a strong gust of side wind would soon tip this vessel over, it is amazing that there was only one fatality, but of course that was one too many.

RIP.
Just taking a rare opportunity to agree with aog and em ...
I'm a very novice sailor ( going up to Scotland later this year with Mum's boyfriend who sails a lot) but this is just so sad. I always think there is a poignancy when someone is in the peak of their lives and die doing something they love.
Usually when a yacht capsizes the crew just gets wet but just occasionally someone gets entangled in the rigging underwater. The poor guy was just very unlucky.
Absolutely dreadful news. My heart goes out to his wife and son x
I agree the news is very sad. But this type of sailing is very much at the extreme end of the sport, so I guess we should not be too surprised when things like this happen.
