In the US it was found that evangelical Christians almost invariably voted Republican . It was found that was a part of the pattern the more religious the voters are , the more right wing they are.

Probably heard that God used to converse with George Bush.
Abortion laws may be one reason.
Its an interesting point. Not sure that that same linkage, between conservative, right wing values and atheism holds true elsewhere, but it certainly appears to be in the US - and there is no philosophical or political reason especially.

It might be the route by which people come to their atheism, which usually involves embracing more liberal values on womens rights, gender equality, reproductive rights and all of that, and a rejection of traditional religious view - and i suppose the republican party has become associated for many with such values.

A relevant article from about.com highlights some of the republican party values and why therefore someone who is atheist might reject them....

Take a look about half way down at a list of values that the Republican Party endorses - I cannot think of many conservative or right leaning parties in europe, for example, that would have a similar list...

The evangelicals proclaim their pro-life belief ( on abortion) and yet fail to support any restriction on the use of any guns , which kill hundreds more.
I think it might have something, too, to do with the fact that while it may never be said openly, at some level all religions have a sense of superiority over those who disagree with them. Superior can mean right, and set firmer in views, as all other people are necessarily wrong. When already the Christianity of the US is traditional you have people who are set firm in traditional views with a sense of superiority over others. That sums up Republicanism pretty well for me.
Perhaps its because the Democrats are better educated ?

I don't - but it does seem to me that many very vocal atheists who claim socialist affiliations are just as irrational in their political philosophy as the faithful are in their religious belief.
