I think there is a very good reason why they might accept the money - Triggersphere has already got there. Honour won't pay for the kids' education.

As far as I can see, the family have no claim against the Australian station or the DJs (although someone far more experienced than me could correct me on this - but I don't see any claim under the Fatal Accidents Act or under negligence - no duty of care, no foreseeability, causation issues).

Thus the best the family have is a moral claim. The money will not bring the mother back; it will not heal the wounds; but it may help life for the children easier when they have lost the person who may have paid for their education.

If the mother had been killed in a road traffic accident as a result of someone's negligence, would they be wrong to accept the money?! No. And they would be right to fight for compensation.
Ignore me, I meant Triggerhippy, not Triggersphere. This "same first bit, different last bit" confuses the hell out of me.
The nurse had little thought for the bereavement of her family when she allegedly committed suicide. It makes me wonder if the prank was the whole story.
I'm sorry if you thought I was making it 'personal' em10. But I guess you can tell from my comment nonetheless that I thought it was a positive act by the radio station and that you might be pleased about it.
in oz one crass turn deserves another....
Are we not missing the story - surely the fund is for people to donate to, it's not all coming from the radio station itself (or am I wrong)?

Tambo, people at the point of suicide don't think like that, all they can think of is that the world is not worth staying in and that people would be better off without them.

Boxy, i know that, one of the happiest, for the most part, people i have ever met committed suicide, that moment when he couldn't face life, then was gone. It isn't something you forget.
Question Author
i think the money is coming from the advertising, would have to read the piece again.

Sydney broadcaster 2Day FM said it would donate the money from its advertising profits.
If Mrs Saldanha hadn't killed herself, would her or the other nurse's identity have been made public?

I just trying to understand why she made the extreme decision to end her life over this.

Question Author
gooner, no one knows, and no one may ever know, i really feel for her family.

Now they're saying she was alive when they found her. They must have been moments from being able to help her.

Question Author
what a truly terrible thing, if she didn't leave a note, or tell anyone how she felt, no matter whether it was this case, then the family are left helpless
I haven't read all the posts on this thread, but why are they giving out this money, there has not been an inquest into her death yet, so none knows or may never know why she took her own life?

Some victims have to go through a lengthy and expensive law suit to sue their wrong doers, why is this family being handed a cash sum on a plate?

And I don't wish to sound unsympathetic to the family when I put this, as this has been a tragic case of a Wife and Mother taking her life for whatever reason, round about the time of a practical prank.
//And I don't wish to sound unsympathetic //

And yet you managed it very well!!
Em....I think I heard,in my dozy state this morning, that the radio station has pledged the profits from its advertising for the next three months to the family.
I find that interesting.
headstones and funerals are expensive, i'd accept it
last I'd heard 2 of their major advertisers had pulled out.
Hi Alba...I think quite a few are pulling out. They will have to pull out all stops to keep as many as they can. For the next three months it will be the family who lose out if advertisers leave. Clever?.....yes I know I'm a cynic.
friedgreentomato

How can you say that?

I am always sympathetic towards you, because you deserve sympathy so much.
