It won't happen due to the various time zone differences.

I know, but I think it's a good idea all the same.
Good idea, but, what sb said^^^^
Yes it's a good idea but there will always be some clown who will want to spoil it. Just like at work, we used to get one woman who would insist on using the phone bang on 11am and the poor sod at the other end would have to break the silence too.
This is the sort of thing I object to about Rememberence day.

It's the way it's foisted on you

Look Jon Snow's not wearing a Poppy - tut tut

Aren't you observing a 2 minute silence?

If people want to have their commemorations that's great for them but stop trying to make it mandatory
Question Author
unfortunately there will always be clowns.

I'm convinced I remember a news summary from my childhood, where they reported that the silence was broken by a sneeze or a cough from their various coverages throughout the UK.
SB

Do what we do in our office

Those who want to go to the car park and observe the silence there

Stop trying to enforce it on everybody!
Where did I say I was trying to enforce it?
Whilst a lot of users in parts of the world which observe the 11/11 rememberance services MAY take part in this, unfortunately, the vast majority of internet traffic is now Asian based therefore unlikely to observe this, as noted from

http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm

Additionally, even within the EU, as a majority of Member States do not observe the silence, which is a Commonwealth idea, then the participating numbers in the web-iverse are nt going to change usage stats for the day.

I think you refered to people who wanted to talk at 11 as "clowns"
Question Author
I'm not suggesting for one second to make it mandatory. if folk don't want to do anything internet connection, then that's fine.

Interesting links, Nibble, thank you. I'll have a look later on.
I had no problem with her talking but she used to deliberately phone someone up and start talking to them so they would have to break the silence too, whether they wanted to or not. It was that, that I found disrespectful.
A few years ago our local radio station observed the 2 minute silence, however they forgot to disable their emergency backup that cut in automatically when they stopped broadcasting, so we had 2 mins of OASIS.
i agree with you there sb. but surely it was up to person on the other end not to answer the phone. t coul just lifted the receiver and then put it straight down.
Yes, and then found out later it was the Chief Exec phoning them. None of us were that stupid.
Question Author
oh gawd Baldric. My idea of hell, great for the Oasis fan though :-)

Agree with you LJ, the phone is there for my convenience, if it rings when I'm in the middle of dinner, for example, I ignore it.
SB, easily dealt with if you are the recipient, I just don't answer the phone
Got me poppy and will be observing the two minutes at my local war memorial with a few old timers. Then down to the Cross Keys to have a pint in remembrance of them that never came back!
Bless em all....

And then you have a phone ringing for 2 minutes during the silence with people looking at you.
