Yes it's a good idea but there will always be some clown who will want to spoil it. Just like at work, we used to get one woman who would insist on using the phone bang on 11am and the poor sod at the other end would have to break the silence too.
I'm convinced I remember a news summary from my childhood, where they reported that the silence was broken by a sneeze or a cough from their various coverages throughout the UK.
Whilst a lot of users in parts of the world which observe the 11/11 rememberance services MAY take part in this, unfortunately, the vast majority of internet traffic is now Asian based therefore unlikely to observe this, as noted from
Additionally, even within the EU, as a majority of Member States do not observe the silence, which is a Commonwealth idea, then the participating numbers in the web-iverse are nt going to change usage stats for the day.
I had no problem with her talking but she used to deliberately phone someone up and start talking to them so they would have to break the silence too, whether they wanted to or not. It was that, that I found disrespectful.
A few years ago our local radio station observed the 2 minute silence, however they forgot to disable their emergency backup that cut in automatically when they stopped broadcasting, so we had 2 mins of OASIS.
i agree with you there sb. but surely it was up to person on the other end not to answer the phone. t coul just lifted the receiver and then put it straight down.
Got me poppy and will be observing the two minutes at my local war memorial with a few old timers. Then down to the Cross Keys to have a pint in remembrance of them that never came back!
Bless em all....
