From my "lefty liberal" perspective the most important thing is proportion.

Sentences for such a crime should reflect the vulnerability of the victim - definately but not overtake those where serious injury was inflicted nor those overtake those where permanent disability was caused and the in turn not overtake where someone was killed by recklessness or design.

The other really important thing is that we don't let judges become influenced by emotive stories in the media.

Tell me if I'm wrong but I think this is where you and I fundamentally part ways.

I think you would like sentences to reflect the degree of public feeling being expressed for a particular individual crime.

To me we should resist this at all costs because that places criminal justice in the hands of people like Rupert Murdoch's media and the amount of sympathy or outrage his editors can drum up.

I'd just love a new term to be created. 'Lefty liberal hand-wringer' is so old hat now. Its like 'yoghurt-knitter' and 'tree-hugger'. They've lost whatever satirical edge they had through overuse...

Like when people use the word '...not' at the end of a sentence to negate it, without realising that it was last amusing when used in 'Wayne's World'...which was out twenty years ago.

A mate of mine calls me a 'gliberal' (glib + liberal), which I thoroughly like.

Can we not use that one instead?
