Police have shamed 80 drivers who took photographs of a crash on the M1.

Pictures of them appear in todays Daily Mail and the story says they have committed an offence by using a camera while driving.

It is the first time I have heard of that. Are they telling Porkies?

Drivers committed an offence by using phones and cameras at the wheel

They were undeniably ghoulish but is it right to publish their photos?

When it comes to things like eating, smoking, applying make-up, map reading and tuning in the car stereo, they are not against the law but drivers can be charged with careless driving or not being in proper control of their vehicle[i

[i] Driving while holding a mobile phone is a specific offence and is automatically punishable with a £30 fine. This will soon increase to £60 and three penalty points on a licence when the Road Safety Bill becomes law within the next few months[i]

[i]This applies not just to phones but to all gadgets which send or receive data electronically, including PDAs and GPS navigation systems]
You must have a photographic memory, sp

Thanks for the clarification.

BUT : /// (But weirdly, I have no problem watching 'slasher' horror films - go figure) ///. is interesting.

I love war films but dive being the settee at anything like that.
I don't recall exact details but I recall reading quite a bit a while ago about how the police can define place or situation or something as a time/place that one is not allowed to photograph, apparently on whim. Various professional photographers were getting caught.

But if, as you say, the objection was photographing while driving, well hardly surprising then. You can get pulled over for using one hand to put a choc bar in your mouth these days. So if something that petty can catch you out, taking a photograph, something that needs concentration, is a sure fire 'no no'.

As for naming & shaming perps, I think it works better in small communities where the offence is recalled and everyone knows the individual, and so folk don't wish to attract that sort of rep. But in a large community, it's likely to just cause resentment of authority and so not a good plan IMO.
Mick-Talbot...I think that might be a misnomer...what people call a photographic memory is an 'idetic memort', isn't it?

And no - I don't have a particularly good memory, but I work very near King Cross station and at the time the we're loads of people whom I assume, were from the Netherlands standing outside a large pub. They were difficult to miss as they were dressed head-to-toe in orange.

Anyone would've remembered that.

They were there for a while, together together with a group of very pretty Meditterean girls and an old lady with one of those trolley basket things.

Wow - perhaps my memory is better than I thought.
I am mystified by people who take pics with mobiles at accidents - just wjat do you do with them?

Arrive home and say 'Here are some pics i took of a fatality I gawped at earlier on?'

I am seriously mistified - does anyone want to admit that they do take pics like this - and what they actually do with them?
No sp.

Eidetic memory, actually.
Wouldn't dream of it, Andy. I actually try not to look at all.
I passed a nasty accident this morning, the last thing on my mind would be to film it, trying to maneouvre around the smashed cars was bad enough.

The internet has a lot to answer for, but great for sickos like these.
Mick-Talbot, I stand corrected. In my defence, I've only ever heard it spoken about, rather than seeing the word written down.

andy-hughes...there are websites which allows people to post gross pictures of accidents. I was once sent a link to it (by someone I later sacked). Wasn't aware of the contents, but it was grim.

On the outer echelons of society are people who get a kick out of looking at, and disseminating these images.

To me, it's a form of pornography.
\\\\I am seriously mistified - does anyone want to admit that they do take pics like this - and what they actually do with them?\\\

Well personally, I wouldn't take a picture of an accident.......but it is not uncommon to come across one and that would be the talking point as to when you finished your journey. A photograph would save a lot of muddled explanations and descriptions and i suppose could be used as information on the accident.

Does anyone remember the film Crash? This was a film whereby an accident scene stimulated sexual excitement.
/// we're loads of people whom I assume, were from the Netherlands standing outside a large pub. They were difficult to miss as they were dressed head-to-toe in orange. ///

Ah! but do you remember if they were wearing clogs?

ups! that isn't racist is it?

/// They were there for a while, together together with a group of very pretty Meditterean girls and an old lady with one of those trolley basket things. ///

Now you are going too far, how on earth did you deduce that they were indeed Mediterranean girls, pretty or not?
I think it's shown by his obvious avoidance of mentioning it AOG is, in fact, more interested about the old lady with the trolley but embarrassed to ask ;)
AOG

Because I know a smattering of Spanish, and heard them chatting as I made my way to the gym.

Talking of Spanish, this is beginning to feel somewhat like an inquisition.

;-)
sp1814 - that really is spooky!

I have mentioned several times previously on assocaited threads that I do not subscribe to the mass-communication aspects of the internet - which may be a generational thing, but i actually doubt it.

The honest truth is, I have other things to do with my keyboard than disseminating a load of information about my day-to-day life, or reading others doing the same.

I cannot see any worthwile result in photographing a car crash and posting it anywhere on the web - what purpose can that possibly realistically serve?

Squad, I have never seen a picture of an accident that delayed any jorueny, and would not be interested in evidence from anyone else about what happened. I would simply tell anyone who was affected by my delay that i jhad been delayed by an accident. What other info could anyone possiblY want or need in addition to that?

Funny you asked that Chuck, because I was going to ask if it was the ordinary cheapy trolley or the super four wheeled version.

They might have been from any one of these countries below, just like because you may have heard someone speaking English, and they could have come from anywhere around the globe.

He says, further turning the 'screws'. :0)

The following 14 countries have Spanish as an official language:

1. Bolivia
2. Colombia
3. Costa Rica
4. Cuba
5. Ecuador
6. El Salvador
7. Equatorial Guinea
8. Guatemala
9. Honduras
10. Panama
11. Paraguay
12. Peru
13. Spain
14. Venezuela

True, but in terms of identification, let's say they were of 'Mediterranean appearance'.
I've met some Cubans that not only speak Spanish but also look Mediterranean in appearance.

Ever tried the 'Iron Maiden'? :0)
