Why is it that some people are not proud of this fact?

I know someone who lives in All Saints Road. They have to leave their house for a week each year simply to be able to conduct a normall life during "Carnival". And before you ask, they lived there before the Carnival became the blight on the area that it is today.

However, back to the question. The problem with offering asylum is that, like many things in the UK, what are originally laudable ideas very rapidly become hugely abused. However, the small numbers that are granted asylum are but nothing compared to the numbers of people from all over the globe that seek to settle here, placing huge strains on overstretched resources. Yes, we may need a few skilled personnel to run some of our businesses which are not to be found among the home-educated population (largely because of a totally unfit State education system). But the downside of that is that we also import huge numbers of people who cannot or will not contribute to the nation's well-being.

apologies, just distinguishing between the excellent work done by agencies and charities for genuine asylum seekers (as shown by an exhibition at swansea museum last weekend) and the Daily Mailesque 'influx' of migrant workers who aparently ALSO attempt to come in on this pretext!

It’s strange to be labelled a Fascist just because I object to my nation being reduced to a doss house and dumping ground for the dregs of the world. Even more so when you consider the cost of supporting such people when the nation is effectively skint. Still, there’s nowt so queer as folk. I only wish they’d pay for their predilections and not expect me to do so.

In the mid 19th Century a lot of starving Irish came because of the famine. Later it was Jews fleeing the pogroms of Tzarist Russia who settled and made a new life here. Both these groups have added much to the culture and prosperity of the UK.
The UK should be very proud that people fleeing for their lives can find a safe refuge here.
