What can be done to 'detoxify' he flag ov St George
Only 61% of English respondants reported feeling pride in the cross of St George.
The figures in Wales and Scotland (for THEIR nation flags are much higher).
Could this be because the BNP and EDL have politicised the nation symbol of identity, and thereby altered its meaning?
Is there an equivalent of the BNP in Wales and England? Have they sullied their own flags by allowing them to be associated with right wing groups?
Why did we allow this to happen again (it took YEARS for the link between the Union Flag and the Nation Front to fade).
I've heard from a couple of sources on AB, that you cannot be black or Asian and call yourself English - is this another reason behind the fragmenting of our country? No matter how much one assimilates, no matter whether you wear the best M&S suit, drive a Ford and live in Surrey, some white Britons will always see you as (the BNP puts it) 'a resident alien (and I don't think the BNP were referring to ET at this point...)

Maybe its because the Queen has hijacked the Union Flag. Since Dianas death the Union flag is displayed at Buckingham Palace when not in residence. Before it was the Standard flag. The monarchy is not universally accepted and like the BNP its detractors abhor the connection.

But seeing that you brought it up about Nazi salutes, perhaps they are mocking their opponents., and judging by this youtube clip, any EDL or March for England (call them what you may) makes them all seem like a picnic in the park by comparison.

You are right sp1814 but being accepted as English requires something else ,it requires you to believe you are English and adopt English culture.
If you stand outside Finsbury Park mosque lapping up anti English rhetoric and cheer when a foreign team beats ENGLAND at football and cricket you will never be accepted as English . You obviously are not.
Quite simply if I go to France I will never be accepted as French no matter
how much try and when I walk down Slough high street I see hundreds of
mainly Asians who don't even try. Its got nothing to do with flags you have to feel it in your heart .

Look at Ainsley Harriott, Chris Eubanks and remember that black Tory MP who was rejected by the Cheltenham Tory party. He was black, but was 'English' i acccent, outlook and ambition.
