Only 61% of English respondants reported feeling pride in the cross of St George.

The figures in Wales and Scotland (for THEIR nation flags are much higher).

Could this be because the BNP and EDL have politicised the nation symbol of identity, and thereby altered its meaning?

Is there an equivalent of the BNP in Wales and England? Have they sullied their own flags by allowing them to be associated with right wing groups?

Why did we allow this to happen again (it took YEARS for the link between the Union Flag and the Nation Front to fade).

I've heard from a couple of sources on AB, that you cannot be black or Asian and call yourself English - is this another reason behind the fragmenting of our country? No matter how much one assimilates, no matter whether you wear the best M&S suit, drive a Ford and live in Surrey, some white Britons will always see you as (the BNP puts it) 'a resident alien (and I don't think the BNP were referring to ET at this point...)

What's the answer?

There was no RSPCA in the Olden days
none the wiser?
Could it be St. Patrick who banished snakes from Ireland?
that is a myth, which has been well and truly debunked.
It's got nothing to do with Far-right groups high-jacking our national flag, it is all part of the establishments plan to somehow frighten us of from our ethnicity, so as to fit more easily in their dream of multi-ethnicity, just as the word 'racist' will be banded about so as to make us scared to mention anything that doesn't fit in with their political correctness.

All parties have for years have strove to wipe England and all that it stands for from the map, even Europe would wish us to become regions of Europe.

In answer to sp1814 remarks on certain sources saying that one cannot be classed as English if one is Asian or black, one could equally say that if some Asians and blacks considered themselves English foremost that would go a long way to correct that misconception.

Rather than just blame certain groups or our flag for bringing shame down upon England, the question should be asked, "why are some residents in our country anti British/English in the first place"?
I have a British passport but I consider myself English first. Each year, in time for 23/4 we always put up the English flag and it is proudly flying in our garden as I type. We put it up because we are glad to be English and not afraid to say so. Our flag is there to celebrate England, not any saint or any political allegiance.

To answer the OP's question........fly the flag from your homes and be glad that it is that flag that is flying there and not any other.
BNP use the union flag don't they?
D9, yes they do
Having spent 7 years of my working life abroad in Africa and the Middle East I can say I have NEVER been asked if I was English , British yes English no.
Similarly I have never heard an expat refer to themselves as English, it is all ways 'British' Worldwide we are known as 'Brits' no matter which part of the UK you come from.
St George supposedly killed a dragon and now there are no blessed dragons left! That's why MadFerret refers to him as "a person who wiped out an animal species", I imagine.
(Yes, I know it's all mythology; I'm just trying to explain for the benefit of those who seemingly failed to understand what he was referring to.)
I don't think it needs detoxifying. I think we're just not as bothered about it as other places. That's probably the main reason why people who do fly a union flag or St george cross are viewed with suspicion - "why do they have that flag - are they right wing extremists?".

I think it's ridiculous for people to be proud of being English or Scottish or any nationality. You should be proud of your achievements. Being born in a certain place isn't an achievement, it's just a random happening.
You can feel priveleged and lucky that you were born here as opposed to North Korea or some other godawful hell-hole, but that's a different thing.
I am English... not British I wear a red rose and fly the flag I think its just a way of defining yourself I hate being thought of as 'British' or European.....
Spot on AOG, saved me a lot of typing !
Same as the scots are Scottish and the welsh - Welsh etc.
/// BNP use the union flag don't they? ///

Yes that is why they are called the 'British National Party'

I suppose if we dared to have an 'English National Party' just as Scotland have their 'Scottish National Party', we could then fly our English flag with pride and also fight for an English Parliament and other issues appertaining to the English specifically.
I've always thought of myself as British, one with the whole islands, but have to say it is beginning to feel inappropriate as different parts want more autonomy. It's like a family splitting up.

BTW regarding Americans and others referring to Britain as England, I learnt on QI (which of course is never wrong) that it was the usual way of referring to the whole of Britain as England at one time and it is in recent times any distinction has been made. Not overly sure why the practice was abandoned myself ;-)

61% eh ? Well that's more than half. So no problem yet then.

AOG

I was mixing up my groups.

It is of course, the EDL who have co-opted the flag of St George. Now - the problem with that is that subconsciously, people begin to associate what should be a national symbol of unity, with a right wing movement.

Fortunately during people's of proper national celebration, the flag if St George can be waved without shame, but these occasions (royal weddings, jubilees, World Cup tournaments) aren't frequent enough to wrestle the flags away from their more common usage, which is to be wrapped around the shoulders of a skinhead screaming...well, w all know what they scream.

One last point - when I as a black man stated on AB, that I should be able to call myself Englishman AOG - you *specifically* told me I wasn't.
What does England stand for, which all parties have striven to wipe out?

I don't remember the specific post, so if you could furbish me with the specific thread, I will be able to see if you had taken what I said out of context.

But please answer me this, how is it that the Scots can have their very own 'Nationalist Party' without being labelled 'Right-Wing' screaming skinheads?

Also they do not seem to attract the wrath from their own ethnic minorities as do the English.
It stands for fewer citizen rights than Scotland, N. Ireland, and Wales doesn't it ?
