Its been 24 hours and one man is keeping a whole police force at bay.
They have tried stun grenades but 3 police have been hurt,

Why dont they just go in and end it one way or another?

The SAS wouldn't wait this long for one man to give up!

Because in terms of intelligence he is worth more to them alive than dead. To capture a member of al qaeda and to be able to interrogate him and find others who also may be part of sleeper cells is very valuable.

To just shoot him dead, or let him commit suicIde, and all that potential knowledge is lost.

You have a short memory. The Iranian Embassy seige (the clue is in the name) probably the SAS's finest hour, there was a stand off of six days before the SAS went in.
I'm sorry, but I am laughing at the person's resistence!

rhemember zhis. I vill tell it ahnlee vance
He probably has 'human rights' and a pizza on the way.
Listen carefully, I will say this only once.

If you are going to do Allo, Allo catchphrases, at least get the line right.
The Balcombe Street Siege in London when the Metroplitan Police trapped members of the IRA in a house also lasted Six days before its successful conclusion.

But sorry, the OP was posted to encourage some French bashing and general snook cocking at our neighbours. And here's me confusing things by giving examples of when we have waited several days before ending a seige. Carry on posting about Human rights and the EU and the french surrendering (you can even quote Monty Python if you like).

just so you know, like ;-)
It's nothing to do with "typical French" - it's a seige - it takes as long as it takes.
how long should a siege last, going on some that have happened in Britain as long as it takes to take the person alive, as they obviously want to do in this situation.
I doubt they'll capture him alive. It looks like he's decided he's going to die but is dragging it out to see if he can kill a few more before he goes.

How is this situation 'typically French'?
The police are now in the apartment and lots of gunfire so looks like things may come to an end soon. News just said the suspect is reported as dead.
Why don't they just pump in quick acting sleeping gas?
Nothing is likley to be that quick, he'd probably be prepared anyway, and the place is hardly sealed.

Aye, the BBC site confirms they believe it may be over, but await official confirmation at the moment.
because its not a movie
judging by the latest news reports this murderer is on his way to get his 72 virgins or whatever other garbage he believed in
good riddance
The killer jumped out of a window, still firing, and was found dead outside [France 24 TV]
