I filled up my oil tank back in June so reckon there is about £5/600 's worth of fuel in it. Haven't had it on yet. I've just been asked by a friend to take over her cottage (probably moving in 1st week in Jan) anyone know if there is anyway I can realise back my outlay? It's a rented property and I guess the new tenants could just say 'toughies, we don't want to buy it'. I realise they will have to have oil but when push comes to shove, I can't make them buy it. Any suggestions welcomed!

Try having a word with your supplier, see if they will take it back. Obviously you won't get all your money back, but somethings better than nothing.

RedH, don't have anything at all remotely large enough to take the oil - even if I do it bit by bit but will ask ' a man wot might know!' thanks.
Will contact my supplier on Monday SAlice - you never know. thanks
You can try your supplier but I don't reckon they will want to know. Too much hassle - they can't sell it to someone else unless taken back to the depot and retested. How do they know otherwise the customer hasn't inadvertently tampered with it. So a special tanker is going to have to come out to pick it up.
Better to attempt sale to incoming tenant.

that was my (regretably) thought too BM but thanks all the same.
Have a word with the landlord he may be able to put in their contract they have to pay you for oil.
Question Author
thanks ubasses - certainly worth a try.
i would definitely request that the new tenants pay - even if in instalments - for the oil! they will need it eventually anyway ...
Question Author
agree cath but can't see how I can insist - will chat with the agent

I do have a very good relationship with the owner so will give it a try - thank you RedH
someone should repay you for this asset, either way!

a rented place with oil CH is very unusual! x
Interesting one ...

... it's your oil (you bought it) so if they use it then they should pay you.

They can obviously say 'no thanks' but you could presumably then lock off the supply to prevent them 'stealing' it. But that would need the agreement of the landlord ... tricky.

The easy solution is offering it to them at a reasonably significant discount (so everybody wins something), but this might only work only if they thought there was a real possibility that you would leave them with an empty tank if they don't agree.

If you are anywhere near a farming area, just ask around in the pub. We sold our final half tankful (and the tank!) to a local farmer at the point where we got mains gas. They always need oil & usually have the machinery to collect it.

agree cath, hence the thread but regretably what Should happen isn't necessarily what Will happen. Decent folk would buy it off me (happy to let it go at a reduced rate) - was just trying to find out if anyone on AB had had any experience with this sort of thing. Think I'll go and have a google around - thanks
it's difficult isn't it - when we were selling our house i was running down the oil because i didn't see any way round it. You can't force them to buy it (and if was a buyer i'd be a bit wary unless you had a digital gauge i think)
Question Author
thank you for all the replies - nice to have different perspectives. Will ponder my options and try and get an amicable resolve with the agent. Really appreciate everyone's input.
If I was moving in I'd buy it off you and I suspect most peeps would - after all, they'd have to fill the tank anyway (and have to pay) so hopefully they'll see it as a bonus that you've saved them the job. Rather nasty of them if they don't, I reckon.

Good luck though....as you say - if they wanted to be awkward, they could.
Question Author
To true Mrs C - lets just hope all is resolved in good faith - can't do too much if it isn't but I do live in hopes!
I reckon they'll be chuffed to bits once you tell 'em you'll let 'em have it at a right good price. If they give you any grief, just give us the nod and we'll get the AB heavies to give them a "visit". :o)

Good luck with your move.
