.......many actually own property in Ireland

http://www.dailymail....and-NOT-homeless.html

Why are we pussyfooting around these scrounging, tax avoiding law breakers?

Send in the heavy mob, clear the horde of great unwashed (aka socialists/tree huggers/do gooders) massed at the camp entrance, then round up the gypsies and put them on the first ferry back to Ireland

Jake.I don't think anyone is suggesting rounding these people up and putting them into concentration camps and working them to death. No comparison to the Nazis me thinks.
Just a few points.

How much council tax and water rates have they been paying, I wonder? And TV licences? And have they got gas/electricity and telephone connections? Do they pay tax/NI? I just don't know the position on these- does anyone know?

I think part of the reason it's taken ten years is there have been legal arguments.

I don't think there is any doubt it was green belt and there is no planning permission.

I doubt they all have homes in Ireland and I don't see the relevance. I see no grounds for deporting to Ireland.
"I have every reason to dislike travellers as a few years back some swindled my father out of quite a lot of money"

Priceless comment
The debate should be about the planning issues, not the nationality/state of cleanliness of the residents.
Basildon Council have been trying to get these people sorted - they just resisted and kept resisting.
Some of you may not know (and clearly the Murdoch brigade don't realise) but an unlawful development that is not removed within 10 years of its construction CANNOT later be challenged by the planning authority. It is precisely for this reason that Basildon Council, having exhausted other means, is now taking action before the 10 years expires.
About 5 years ago a beautiful 5 bedroomed house about 3 miles from me was demolished by the local authority. Why? - it too had been built without permission. The owners were distraught. There was a small piece in the local rag, not no media fuss / questions on AnswerBank like this.
These people think they can get away with it because:
there are 50 families / residencies - more equals more publicity
they are an ethnic group apparently, so it is THEY playing the ethnic card to their advantage
Basildon Council have offered to rehouse them - they have a legal duty. Of course the Dale Farm residents don't want that. They want an outcome on their terms.
I hope you're watching Dispatches and are still defending those "people" who have infested a nature reserve with their rubbish and going to the toilet and leaving bog paper all over the local woods Jake.

How you can defend these people is beyond me, it really is.
My problem with t he travellers is that they do not respect the laws of the land, not the people who live in the areas they move into. If they did, they wouldn't leave such a mess, wouldn't intimidate or steal from the locals. Where they have flaunted the law they should be treated just like every other citizen of this country and accept punishment. Planning laws are for everyone! As much as most of us hate them, we still have to abide by them. If one of us put up a house without planning permission, we would be told to demolish it and move on ... So, why should it be any different for the "Travellers"? If they own land elsewhere, why can't they live on that?
These 'travellers' live outside the law and society. There money is made by doing sub standard work at outragious prices for peoiple who cannot afford it and who are intimidated by them. They pay no tax and will steal anything that isnt nailed down. Don't tell me I don't know what i'm talking about because I have dealt with these people in an inner City area for 30 years. They are travellers...Why do they object to being made to move on? If they want to put down roots, then join society and pay their way.
I see that elgreco is yet another person who entirely misses the point on why they should be removed and plays into straight the hands of the Dale Farm residents
I can't believe that in this day and age there are no laws in place to prevent travellers and squatters defiling peoples' property. It makes my blood boil to think the EU regulations protect people like these.
Green belt, fan belt or Karate black belt... They have no right to be there. If you or I lived in a propery/on land that we had no right to occupy, we would be removed (by force if needed). The majority of these 'travellers' are not law abiding people so why should the be treated with kid gloves. Another example of 'two tier' England!!!
the blonde at the barricade was tasty
Whole streets of houses are locked up ... while the families live in their state of the art caravans in England.

LOL at the idea of a "state of the art caravan" !!!

=0D
Rather a snobby attitude there Jayne.

Perhaps this isn't your idea of state of the art as far as caravans go, but I wouldn't turn my snout up at it.

(not a traveller 'van by the way- well, unless they've nicked it since the time of publication anyway)
Sorry, B00 ... you're right.

Although that pic looks more like a static mobile home than a caravan.
and you're right, tis, mind you, so are a lot of the "travellers" homes.
Actually, the "caravan" (or whatever) in that picture looks nicer then the lady's house in the news article. I'm not surprised she wants to stay if hers is anything like that.
Okay, B00 ... I agree ... that one is lovely.

I'm obviously not up to date with caravans, LOL.
oh my, i had no idea the traveling people were hated so much.
We don't all hate them, anne.
