Are we ulimately responsible for torture carried out in Afghan jails and can we expect a flood of claims? To deny knowledge of this torture being carried out does not wash!

maybe it doesn't wash, but then our politcians were on friendly terms with Gadaffi, so what do some people expect. This man was supposedly an enemy of Gaddafi, our so called friend, who presumably could help in the war on terror, and to some that meant using these methods to get information.

Let me add I do not condone what they have done, torture should never be used, but it is, and not just by the Americans, or the British, and so now expect claims to come thick and fast.
If we had a reasonable expectation that would happen then yes obviously.

Compare with jews handed over to the Nazis. A very touchy subject in France and other places!
JTP not just in France, but so many places. But that's another matter.
i have read and believe that torture rarely works, by the time the poor person is at the end shall we say, they will say anything to make it stop. So the level of intelligence that can be gleaned is often of no use.
Afghanistan is basically a tribal society living many centuries behind the world. We living in USA or UK can't even imagine the extent of their ignorance. However, when I came to know the about Abu Garaib, Bagram and Guantanamo jails, I realized industrial development did not mean a nation is civilized. Right now for me, Americans, Europeans and Afghans all are equal in terms of civilization. The only difference is one party has more doctors, engineers and technicians the other party does not have all that.

One thing is common in both these talibans and Western governments. Both consider themselves on the right path. Both are trying to "liberate" this world.
