Bit of a sweeping statement wouldn't you say.
Question Author
No......I have always believed this and have often posted on AB to got any A&E in any city or large town at the weekend.
Sadly, I fear this may be true
The writer`s obviously forgotten the LA riots then. Not to mention the ones in Seattle, Paris and probably a few other places.
I fear he is correct, I wouldn't go to Bournemouth town centre at night these days, I can handle the little yobs but I just don;t want the agro it isn't any fun. I don't envy the young who just want to go and have a good time. The son of a mate of mine was recently seriously injured by a gang in a take away, they were jailed for 3 years a peice, good result but very sad that young people are prepared to throw their lives away like this over what turned out to be nothing discernable.
Question Author
2376SJ...he doesn't seem the type to forget things.........and it is only his opinion...........but you may well be right.
there are plenty of young people who are not like that, and yes i do know, as said before that i have been in A&E, when i was taken ill, when the idiots rolled in drunk, drugged up, injured from fights, and vomiting all over the place, agree with you totally there.

"there are plenty of young people who are not like that"

Dr Daniels did indeed acknowledge that fact.
He did, but quite frankly it's hardly noticeable in the rest of the piece.

Writing for the New York Daily News in a comment piece on the riots, he said: 'Of course it is true that not all young Britons are unattractive in appearance and conduct, only a far higher proportion of them than of the young of any other nation.

4th paragraph.......seems prominent to me.
Bring back national service. That would teach them some discipline, give them a sense of purpose, help find where their abilities lie and provide strong, responsible male role models which are sadly lacking in a large part of today`s society. Of course that would never happen (even though other parts of Europe still have it). It would be against one`s human rights, would interrupt gap years and would be too much like hard work.

237SJ..;-)
On my journey home from work today through central Manchester, young people were seen here & there carrying brushes after volunteering to help wherever needed! There's good & bad everywhere sqad.
SP no again, please do not countenance NS, it's not the answer. The armed services need people who want to join up, be part and parcel of that service, have comradeship, discipline, to be part of a team. Unlike any of the looters and rioters, they are not wanted, nor needed.
Question Author
Quassia...indeed and Dr Daniels acknowledged that fact........he was comparing the worst of the UK with the worst of the rest of the world....in his opinion.
I`m not sure the worst of the Uk is any worse than the US (where the gang warfare originated). The main difference is booze. Although you could say for UK booze, substitute US crack. I can understand though that if the American gang culture is going to spread, the UK will be the place that picks it up as our two societies are very similar. A penchant for violent video games that desensitise, fatherless kids with no male role models so the gang leaders become those role models and a very materialistic society where the have-nots resent the haves. The kids aren`t born bad but a combination of issues has led them to behave that way. We should practice Zero Tolerance like they did in New York but we won`t because we`re too soft.
Why does National service mean joining the armed services ? Having served in the RAF at a time when national service was coming to an end, I know we don't need people who doesn't want to be there. They were a liability and
lowered the moral of the regulars. Couldn't a modern version of national service be a separate entity and have nothing to do with the fighting forces?. It could certainly be run along the same lines, discipline and learning trades, for example, but there would be no weapons involved.
Like borstal you mean, or boot camp, they could try, but like all things, it costs money.
Talking of borstal, I needed a patio window replaced and the man who came to do it said that when he was a teenager, he got into trouble and his mother marched him down to the police station and dobbed him in. He ended up in borstal. He said he reckoned that if he hadn`t gone to borstal, he would have ended up in serious trouble when he got older. Likewise I knew someone in the Navy who said that before he signed up he was stealing and bordering on serious crime. He said the navy saved him. He`s an officer now and has a very good career.
Quassia manchester council were overwhelmed by offers of help to clean up the city by normal people young and old

thing is you will not see that as a headline story flashed round the world
