For a few years now, Melanie Phillips has written extensively on the evils of mass immigration, multiculturalism, and the evils of Islam, which are echoed in the ramblings of Anders Breivik.

Ms Phillips writes in the strongest terms - which is her right, but is she rignt to now wash her hands of the effects?

If someone writes a regular column denouncing (say) Jews, should they feel any responsibility for the rise in anti-Semetic attacks?

jno - thanks for the link. Excellent article...think I'll save that blog to my 'Favourites' folder. In return, you may want to have a look at The Daily Quail and The Media Blog - both excellent antidotes for those weary of the 'vitriol train' (stops at every station on the line...).
>When you demonise a people....Islamic people

I think they have made a good job of demonizing themselves.

Taking bombs on to crowded underground trains, flying aeroplanes in to huge skyscrapers, encouraging people to go out and kill our MPs, and much more besides.

Believe me, this is going to get worse and worse and we will be in a "civil war" in 10 or 20 years time.
sp1814 >> extremists yes - but to tar all Muslims with the same brush is just...weird. I don't know why anyone would think that. <<

you could say the same about people who call all edl members nazi skinhead knuckle dragging thugs
Melanie Phillips is Jewish, so she is bound to be anti muslim. However, in her column she should not let personal feelings get out of hand. I thought as a journalist you had to be at least someway impartial, but then that probably doesn't sell newspapers!
sp, I think the amount of ignorance in some of the reponses just goes to show the effect of this woman's words. Far too many are deciding to ignore logic and their own acquired learnings of how people from similar backgrounds can have different ways of thinking, and chosen instead to listen to the biased (as carolegif suggests) ramblings of so nasty, self righteous Lady!
It really is incredible, I'm just glad this way of thinking is dying out.

i can't see many on here speaking up for her
sp1814's post is the exact point Ms Phillip's was making.

She says that there are many that would use the mass killings to get their political point over, and stir up additional hatred.

Take Sp's headline "Does Melanie have 'blood on her hands''? Why should she? She is only stating a point, and it is being sensualist to refer to 'Blood on her hands', if for example some harm came to Ms Phillips because of this thread, then could we say Sp equally had blood on his hands?

Ms Phillips does not write extensively on just Muslims, mass immigration, and the evils of Islam, she may comment from time to time on these subjects, because these subjects tend not to be spoken of, in fact anyone who dares to, is immediately branded a racist or a fascist, to somehow sweep these sensitive issues under the carpet, in the time honoured way.

'Evils of mass immigration', not EVILS, surely just concerns about mass immigration, which after all has caused many problems.

'Multiculturalism' This was an experiment that has been shown not to work.

'Evils of Islam' yes EVILS, throughout the world many evils have been committed, all in the name of this religion.

Ms Phillips has never denounced Muslims per se, she may have condemned those Muslims that have committed terrorists attacks, criticised those Muslims who are not prepared to condemn their fellow Muslims for their evil deeds, or fully integrate into British society.

Melanie Phillips may write on controversial subjects, but that is what her particular column is all about, just as some write on Politics, Fashion, Media Gossip, etc, etc.

It's called having the freedom of speech, in a free press.
no of course not, after all she hasn't planted bombs or killed anyone, and as to the assumption that because a person is Jewish they have an automatic hatred of Muslims is patent nonsense. This seems nothing more than a concerted effort in some quarters to discredit her, would you say the same about the Muslim women who have stood up for womens rights, equality, and fair treatment in countries where they get little or none, and been murdered for their troubles, no i should hope not.
DrFilth, I admit I am probably using other similar themed thread as references too but there are a number, and a few on this post i.e. R1 and Rov, who seem to have chained themselves to the bandwagon that anything associated with Islam is evil and a serious threat to Britain. On the thread about Sharia law on Saturday, people were throwing all kinds of misinformed opinions about and, assuming that people who had actively sought the knowledge would know the truths, those with these misguided opinions must have obtained them from somewhere. Given that they all seem to follow a similar path to that continuously lead by the DM, it would seem that the paper's erroneous... I'll try not to call them 'hate preachings' so I'll just call them views, are being lapped up by the followers where they fester in their bellies until they splurge out, in most instances, into some "they come over here.." type spiel, but in some instances into violence towards individuals based on the victims appearance.
Mad Mel thinks Darwinism is 'just a theory', Obama is a revolutionary Marxist, gays shouldn't have civil partnerships (and giving IVF fertility treatment to lesbians would 'help destroy our understanding of human identity'), Palestinians are 'a terrorist population' and 'It was the Jews alone for whom historically 'Palestine' was ever their national homeland' (I don't know what she thinks about the Canaanites against whom they committed genocide in order to get the land in the first place).

I don't take her entirely seriously but am not amazed that aog does.
paul i have been getting the mail for well over 10 years i don't think i have ever read one of her articles

i get the mail on sunday for the crossword like a lot of other people on here

i cut the crosswords out the rest of the paper will go in the recycling bin its very rare that i read it

i spent all of sunday doing crosswords so had no time to read any papers and i would imagine there are quite a few others on this site that never read the papers at the weekend
jno >> Palestinians are 'a terrorist population' <<

i don't think i would enjoy reading her articles :)
fair do's drfilth, and I'm probably the other end of the spectrum because I've never bought it, only ever read the type of thread posted to stir a debate, but what I have read really tends to disgust me, they always seem to try and hammer home that this IS what's happening and you must be a fool to ignore it.
paul most of the football stuff in the papers is made up just to make a story and sell papers. some people think it is the truth and then post about it on here

the sunday sport articles were made up over a few pints in a pub called the land of cakes on ancoats lane in manchester town centre opposite the old express building
had a friend who was drinking in the pub and a few were having a laugh over some daft things, on sunday one of the things they laughed at was the front page story
you ought to, DrF - you're paying her wages!
"it is being sensualist to refer to 'Blood on her hands',"

!
i think that was supposed to sensationalist, no?
Is Anders Brievik a Daily Mail reader?
Why didn't he march into a mosque with a machine gun?
To blame the actions of this nutter on someone who writes for the Mail is a bit silly Sp.
I take it you must read her stuff..Just ignore it old chap.
drfilth, the football 'gossip' doesn't tend to lead to people passing judgement on someone based on how they look or what religion they follow.
Kromo... just noticed that..that's not a train of thought I want to follow!
Why do people read it, if it offends their sensibilities. I find it objectionable that people assume all Jews hate Muslims and all Muslims hate Jews. I am an atheist so care for no religion, but what people believe is their business,
and that goes for Ms Phillips.
