In this age of austerity how much does each missile fired from a British jet cost? In comparable terms how many nurses jobs would it save?

how many nurses jobs does it save? well that depends if Qadaffi is targeting hospitals in Libya to eliminate the rebels and those treating them, which given his track record, he probably is.
Not just jobs but wards kept open and less suffering for the people that are ill.

Man always find the money for weapons of war.

I wonder how Britain would react if the protestors in London instead of waving placards took up arms to attack the police and establishments? Why should the Libyan protestors act any different? Its been proven the ballot box is just a smokescreen for having much of the same. Democracy is in the eye of the beholder!
It wouldn't, rov - the defence budget is completely separate from the Health budget. Bearing in mind that the NHS is being slimmed down radically at the moment, in order to try to keep in balance, not firing the rockets wouldn't put any more money in the NHS coffers in the foreseeable future.

I thought it could be expensive but came across this article:

£1m per missile.......oooks!

Remember the millions of pounds we spent in Northern Ireland combating the IRA which was being supported by Gaddaffi and then there was Lockebie and the terrorist training camps in Libya and elsewhere paid for by Gadaffi . That man has cost us and the world ten of millions.
Had we not had WW11 think of all the thousands of nurses and wards we could have had we just allowed Hitler a free hand.
Why not allow criminals a free hand and do away with the police . That would save a few more millions which could be spent on nurses and wards.
I'm sure rov and thedodge can come up with even more brilliant ideas .
even better they could publish their addresses so that the criminals could target them, as well as the IRA and the Libyans - for once, they the underworld fraternity, could do us all a favour so we don't have to read such drivel.
Why is it that whenever an item of public expenditure is queried it always seems to be measured against the number of nurses it could fund? Recent experience leads me to believe that even if the country were awash with nurses, our general well-being would not be improved in the slightest, nor with limitless supplies of doctors, teachers, policemen, etc. ad nauseam.
Britain would act with dignity and decorum, as they did when wpc fletcher was shot.
I still do not fully comprehend why we don't just drop an appropriately sized bomb, one of those US "mother" bombs on Qadaffi and his mob, and just be done with them. You not telling me that they don't know where he is camping out......
modeller // paid for by Gadaffi . That man has cost us and the world ten of millions. //

What an excuse to go and bomb Libya.
The missiles that had have been removed from the arms dumps by rebels which we are helping which are now in the hands of al kidyenot . who will you blame when they are used against the west.

Don't forget a few thousand march and the tory toffs say Mr G should listen to his people.
Half a million march in London has Mr C listened has he f**** he went and had a little trek abroad for some sun.
Ok, so you have no moral problem with somebody practising killing his own people and bordering on genocide.

Blairand Bush made the mistake with Iraq in not using this card - just after the Brits arrived in Basra, they discovered a mass grave of 5000, then the Americans found a similar sized one in Baghdad and 7000 Kurds - and t was well known (BBC documentary) that he was systematically murdering the Gulf fishermen. Their problem.

So you want Qadaffi to continue on unchecked, be it in his own country or internationally.

Simply put, you disgust me.
It is happening in other countries are we going bomb and invade them all.
stop being silly. Libya is a particular problem and has been a thorn in the underbelly of Europe for several decades now.
Sorry magma, but half a million people represents less than one per cent of the the population of the UK. Therefore I think it was quite proper for Cameron to take a break instead of having to listen to a tiny, whinging minority.
DTcrosswordfan answer this one question more people die in other parts of Africa through lack of food and fresh clean water but you would rather we shoot and bomb some rather than feed them.

may i now add
Simply put, you disgust me.
mike , So why should Mr G listen to a few thousand when they march in Libya
I don't follow your thread, magma - we do send relief to Africa - again - different budget.
It's called politics, dear, acting in one's own national interest, as old as the hills. Are you old enough to remember President Reagan's campaign to free Poland and Eastern Europe from Soviet domination at the end of the 80s? Worked in the end for the US; we were less fortunate as the journey to the Land of the Free was too far for most of them so they settled in Britain.
Irrevelance and sign of a very immature mind, politically.

Libya does feed and water most of its population - how do I know? I have been there a number of times and to several cities, as I have been to all but 5 countries on the African continent in my time.

If you read other threads on AB you would come across several who would question Britain's commitment to spending 0.5% of gdp on humanitarian aid (i.e what you refer to with other African nations) and that is the right channel for assisting countries who face food and water issues, in other words, basic Maslow needs

...and I support that, despite the vitriol put forward by those who are anti the spends. It is a pledge we undertook as a leading nation (under GB) and one that we should honour and encourage other nations to do so.

Hence why I find your comments so disgraceful
