This is from a Jewish site, so make of it what you will, but the whole is very interesting reading.

HI Lonnie
I have to admit I never have understood much about wars or the reason for them. I love a peaceful world but sadly that will never be.
One thing I do know, this has brought back very sad memories for me.
A member of my family was involved in the six day war. His Ship was bombed and torpedoed by Israeli jets. They had no weapons on board and many men died as result. My relative suffered great distress for years afterwards but he was one of the lucky ones who did survive.
WE were not told if he was alive or dead for over a week either. There have been many books written on this war, I only know what my relative went through and all of us in his family.
Like everything else in this world, I suppose there are always two sides to a story. I just never realised it was forty years ago!

Hi Cruella,
Many thanks for your reply,
Unfortunately, war doesn't discriminate for the innocent, and your relatives ship and crew was obviously one of the innocent casualties.
Was a reason ever given for this happening?, I would suppose the Israeli's thought they had a good reason for attacking the ship, but had wrong information.
Unfortunately, its an experience that will never leave him, or his relatives, I hope he got some compensation.

As you say, forty years is a long time, while the Six Day War was going on, I was in Aden with the British forces, I was given the option of not going, but turned it down.
Hi Lonnie
Yes, at first they gave the reason that they were under the impression that is was a spy ship in the med.
Think over 75men lost thier lives, my relative, one who survived but injured had to see to the dead and badly injured. Unfortunately, my relative died just after he took early retirement. No, he did not get any compensation at all. After all, he was in the Navy and he knew what he was doing when he joined up. The one thing they did do, was to keep him on land bases throughout his 25 years of service. He got the Purple Heart. Think that was his compensation, but like we both know, there are always casulties on both sides and it is felt by all mankind.

Sometimes Cruella, i'm totally disgusted with the Human Race, obviously, i'm a bit older and wiser now, but I look around the world, and the domestic scene, and just say WHY can't people live in peace together.

Thanks a bunch for taking for taking the trouble to post, its appreciated.
Lonnie
No, thank you for bringing this to my attention. We all get caught up in every day living that sometimes we forget about dates and anniversaries. Also the fact that you even bothered to mention it as mosy people say they have never heard if it or just not interested as it lasted only six days.
Thanks again!
It's a pity you didn't post this on one of the main threads - I rarely look into the sub topics, and I think this is common for most.

Hi Theland,
I wasn't actually sure which one to post it under, couldn't really call it news or Current Affairs, but if you reccomend one, i'll repost, but I think, as some threads in this section get answers from most A/Bers if its something they are interested in, that says it all.

And thanks for looking.
