On a recent post about the BNP, someone asked whether British black or Asians were allowed to join the party.

I've just checked on their website, and the answer is 'No'.

So why aren't they called The 'White National Party'?

This is a serious question, aimed at those who might know...why are they called the BNP when they're not concerned with British people, just white British people???

I was so sure you must be mistaken, but on checking the section on how to join the BNP, and from the way it's worded it looks like you're right. I'm all for upholding decent British standards, and so are many others - be they white, black, green or sky-blue-pink!
Hi sp,
I would guess that it would contravene the race laws, and they wouldn't be allowed to.

As long as they use race as a membership criteria, then they should be treated with contempt, whatever they call themselves.
I have just checked the B N P website , it says that ethnic British and Europeans are welcome.

Nope...it doesn't - click on 'Join' at the top of the screen and have a look at the text underneath.

It specifically excludes non-white Northern Europeans (I'm writing this from memory as I can't connect to the BNP site from work).

Lonnie...I'm not sure it does contravene the race laws because they could claim to be a private organisation who can exclude members if it wishes.

I'm just surprised that they are allowed to exclude them publicly.

...which means that, no matter how they cut it, they literally are a British White Party.

It would be so interesting if they reversed that policy.

Never gonna happen.

I do believe that one of it's leading officers is an Asian. I have seen him on the TV.
There seems to be a lot of confusion. Are there any BNP members on Answerbank who can clarify this for us?
Read it again carefully, and you will find that you are wrong.

I don't think so...have a read of this. I copied it directly from their website:

Membership of the British National Party is open to those of British or kindred European ethnic descent.

While we welcome contact and co-operation with nationalists and patriots of other races, and with the many non-whites who also oppose enforced multi-racialism, we ask them to respect our right to an organisation of our own, for our own, as we respect and applaud their measures to organise themselves in like fashion.

So by being open to "those of British or kindred European ethnic descent" exclude any British born black people?

In fact, it would exclude black servicemen, police, doctors, bank managers etc...

You see what I mean?

The BNP would openly exlude a whole tranch of the British population based on their skin colour.

Did you see something else on their site which contradicts this racially exclusive policy?
Question Author
Sorry, for 'black', read 'non-white'.
Marvelman is right. The key phrase is "British or kindred European ethnic descent" - in effect excluding anyone who is not of European ethnic descent.

Sorry, got that last post wrong. Got the names mixed up. I meant sp1814 is right.

Thanks for the correction...I was just about to saddle up my high horse there...
Saddle up your high horse again sp1814? oh you are so touchy.

You must know by now that I bat on a level playing field, so I ask would a white person be able to join the Association of Black Solicitors? Would a non Muslim be allowed to join the Association of Muslim Lawers? would a man be allowed to join the Association of Women Solicitors?

So what is the difference?

As you know, I'm forever cantering about on my high horse (came third at the 3.50 at Chepstow last week), but in this, I think the BNP have totally shot themselves in the foot.

My question has based on something someone asked in a previous post. I did some digging and found that the BNP don't admit non-white members.

Now, if they reversed that, they would definitely get a few (not many) members of the black/Asian community.

Can you imagine what a publicity coup that would be for them?

They could say that they are committed furthering the cause of British people...all British people.

However, by excluding blacks and Asians, they're saying that they're only interested in promoting the interests of white British people...

The comparison to the Association of Black Solicitors (actually, it's the Black Soclicitors' Network doesn't hold water.

Their membership mandate is as follows:

Membership is open to all solicitors, trainee solicitors, paralegals and students of African or Caribbean descent and any solicitor in England and Wales who supports the aims and objectives of the BSN irrespective of their race, colour or creed.

Question Author
Just looked up the membership mandate of the Association of Muslim Lawyers.

Anyway, irrespective of religious leanings can be an 'associate member'.
sp1814, i am sorry, you are right. that said it does not seem to matter to the people who are turning to the BNP. i was so sure because at the last council elections i was asked at my front door to vote for a BNP candidate standing in my ward by a black chap, the said candidate got elected,
-- answer removed --
Oh so they can join as long as they support the aims and objectives of the BSN, well that's ok then.
Perhaps the BNP should word their recruitment literature simular, oh no ! perhaps not I notice that the BSN exclude Scots (any solicitor in England or Wales) we can't have that, that is indeed racist.
Sorry do not say Black Chap Marvelman, say Non White Chap, that's much better.
Lastest update of the FAQ (updated 12 Mar 2007) on the BNP.org web site answers your question in typical simple terms:

"vi. Why don't you let blacks and Asians into the BNP?

For the same reason the Girl Guides don't allow boys to join. Does that mean they are sexist? Does it mean they hate boys? Of course not, it's just that their aim is to cater for the interests of girls, and similarly the BNP isn't racist, but our purpose is to cater for the interests of the indigenous British population. The indigenous population of Britain is now the only group which is facing systematic, legalised and institutionalised discrimination, harassment and oppression. That's precisely why the British people need the BNP - because we are the one and only organisation that has their interests at heart. There are hundreds of organisations exclusively for blacks or Asians, but only one organisation for the indigenous population - the BNP. "

Difficult to believe but true - they don't allow anyone but indigenous Brits in (whatever they are) .
