Of course it's skewed, but it would be interesting if the Historians amongst us gave a reason for their choices - it would widen our knowledge, surely the aim of Answerbank.

Winston Churchill because he has done it before.
Margaret Thatcher because she had an iron backbone.
Either of the above, edging towards Churchill for Danny's reason.
Oh no. Not another thread about Churchill.

Gromit,

It's an open question! Feel free to submit your choice.

Harold Wilson. He had the nous to keep us out of Vietnam while some others would have been falling over themselves to please the Americans and go.
Yep, Harold Wilson for the reason given - he also gave us our ONLY EVER referendum on the EU.
Gordon Brown.Had a deep understanding of Global Economy .Was involved in G8 and G20 agreements on World poverty and climate change. Encouraged the world to help the poorer African countries.He said that modern technology was vital as a tool for economic recovery.Promoted research into electric cars /home energy efficiency and universal broadband.
The problem is that this question can be skewed by recall-bias.
The most recent prime ministers are recalled more easily and so are more likely to be named

Pitt the Yonger I think.....

or perhaps Lord Derby
Wellington showed the Europeans a thing or two.

//skewed by recall-bias...//

not sure if the prime ministers of long ago would be up to the fast pace of today's world. today, news will have travelled around the world 3 times, in the same time it took lord derby's messenger to get on his horse.
Clement Attlee must be a strong contender, his social conscience and post WW2 experience would be relevant.
a social conscience is likely to be something of a hindrance when decisive action may be needed against those who would kill you without a first thought, never mind a second.
