Someone on radio reminded me of an O Henry story, gist of which is two old people, poor as church mice, her only ‘possession’ her long golden locks, but no comb to comb them with. His sole possession a gold watch, but no chain to hang it on.

She gets her golden locks cut off and sells them to buy him a chain for his watch.

Exchanging gifts, he gives her a comb he has bought with the money he got from selling his gold watch.

O Henry’s version lasts longer.

Love lasts longer still.

If I am not mistaken, they are a young couple.

A wonderful story too, O Henty had such a way with how he handled subject matter.
Yes they were young in the tale.
It's always been a favourite of mine...since I was a teenager.
So they were both worse off than when they started. Is that the 'moral' of the story?
no.
On the subject of love, its not something spoken about on AB very often, and then not in any depth.
Just saying :-)

Yes Spicerack, that’s it.

They should have put their money in the Stock Market and abandoned their stupid ideas of love.

Been better off on Answerbank, eh?
