Duringthe 50 years preceeding the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki the Japanese military succeeded in killing about 10 million people in their rampages around China and Korea. In the 70 years since the atomic bombs were dropped the death toll attributable to the Japanese armed forces is close to zero. Any suggestions as to why this might be?

'Tis a puzzle isn't it
They learnt a lesson.
Yes, Yankee bases in Japan and a very tight leash, and if follow it below learn how black can become white. (;_o ]

" But today, Japan is being re-militarized. And once again, the U.S. government imagines it will like the results. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with U.S. support, is reinterpreting this language in the Japanese Constitution:

"[T]he Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes. ... [L]and, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained."

The new "reinterpretation," accomplished without amending the Constitution, holds that Japan can maintain land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, and that Japan will use war or threaten war to defend itself, to defend any of its allies, or to take part in a U.N.-authorized war anywhere on earth. Abe's "reinterpretation" skills would make the U.S. Office of Legal Counsel blush.

U.S. commentators are referring to this shift in Japan as "normalization" and are expressing outrage at Japan's failure to engage in any wars since World War II. The U.S. government will now expect Japan's participation in any threat or use of war against China or Russia. But accompanying the return of Japanese militarism is the rise of Japanese nationalism, not Japanese devotion to U.S. rule. And even the Japanese nationalism is not weak in Okinawa, where the movement to evict U.S. military bases grows stronger all the time."

Perhaps they matured and saw in their previous system & beliefs ?
they were occupied by the USA for years after the war and forbidden to have an army?

Fortunately nobody nuked the UK so British soldiers are free to go on killing people.

Am sure you know about the bridge on river Kwai, the fall of Singapore & Tenko. No apologies from Japan for atrocities. All attacks during WW2 while Britain was under siege in Europe.

The atom bomb was retaliation for Pearl harbour.

Japan got their revenge with the Datsun 120Y
I have no idea where the words "the flaws" that I definitely wrote in my last post, disappeared to.
I was 18 when the A-Bombs were dropped. So I remember the events then and what led up to them .The Japs had been killing their neighbours , especially the Chinese since the early 30s. They had killed 30 million, plus tortured starved and killed thousands of prisoners of war.
The war against the Germans finished on the 7th May 45 . Japan was called upon to surrender but refused and everyone believed invasion of Japan was inevitable resulting in millions more deaths on both sides. Throughout May , June and July the war continued . Japan again refused to surrender. On the 6th Aug Hiroshima was atom bombed . Again the Japs refused to stop the war . On the 9th Aug the US A-bombed Nagasaki and the next day Japan finally asked for peace.

Did I feel sorry for the Japs at that time ? No I didn't ! Too many members of my family and many of my neighbours had died and suffered at the hands of the Japanese. Even up to today the Japs have shown little or no remorse for their atrocities. We have the bleeding hearts brigade of course and the Japs shed crocodile tears.

They did, however build a shrine, in apology to the humble laboratory rat, some decades after the war.

I used to think this was a noble thing, which put them ahead of other nations in terms of animal rights but I no longer give a ****. I only learnt about the lack of apology to POWs and civilian war dead in later years and their sense of priorities is so wrong, it just adds to the level of insult.

As posted on another post they should pay compo but as they have too many fingers in too many pies it will never happen.
It's derailing the thread a little, but, one can feel sympathy for individual civilians who had their life taken or "ruined" by such weapons whilst holding no sympathy for the nation as a whole whose elite seemed unable to impose civilised behaviour towards others.
my only slight doubt is were both necessary
Agree modeller

"Japanese as victims" isnt a concept close to my heart - having seen FEPOWs in the years after the war - I think the native civilian slave labourers were treated worse if that is possible.

But funnily enough a personal reminiscence may not be accurate

In fact after Nagasaki, the Japanese didnt surrender fast enough. The war party rreally wanted to continue until an invasion. So Curtis Le May arranged another thousand bomber raid to re-flatten Tokyo which was kinda flat enough already. And that apparently concentrated minds
What happened in Japan was Tragic but stopped a war at the cost of many life's, does IS Come to mind?
IS will probably be a victim of their own "success" if they get to big they become an easy and legitimate target. They are losing quite a few of their leaders as it is and the life expectancy isnt great for the general foot soldiers either.
Commerce succeeded for Japan, where naked aggression and atrocities failed.

Cars, cameras, hi-fi, televisions, shipping, excavation vehicles, etc. Japan conquered the world after all.
TWR...the difficulty with applying the same solution to IS, as was used against Japan, is just where would you drop the bomb ? That is why terrorism has been so effective post 1945 !
