or Lord McAlpine had died before erroneous allegations were made against them, would the internet lynch mobs(AB's finest included) now be sitting in judgement on them?

Doubt it.
Very good point, although in the case of JS (which is presumably your reference) the evidence was considerably more overwhelming - but of course has only come to light since his demise, so is less likely to be disputed if false.

I think the LW case,in particular, shows there are people amongst who'll stoop to any depths to turn a fast buck. Why do some people always believe and empathise with the accusers, but seemingly have no regard for the accused or their family.

who was sitting in judgment on Lord McAlpine? The allegations against him were investigated ages ago - properly, not just by newspapers or police forces who couldn't be bothered - and found wanting.
