Why do people tend to hark back to the music of their youth and prefer it? Is it because the songs remind one of happy, young , carefree times or was the music of the past generally better? (1970s in my case)

the music of the 1970s was rubbish, not a patch on the 1960s...

But yes, that's probably the reason.
you're both wrong - the 80's rocked!!!

I liked the early 80s but I think it went a bit flat in the late 80s. Then again, I was still quite young in the early 80s so maybe it is the youth element
oh yes, the decade of Wet Wet Wet [rolls eyes]
Yep, the sun shone every day in the 1960s. And I know all the words, unlike today, when - if I can hear them - I don't understand the language.

I`m thinking more Ultravox, Spandau Ballet etc. I agree, Wet Wet Wet were crap and the lead singer`s horrible. One of my colleagues met him at work once, and he was so vile to her he reduced her to tears. But my point is that the music I listened to from say, early teens to early twenties made the most impact on me and stayed with me and I wondered if that is the case with everybody. Every generation think "their music" was the best. Just heard and old Slade record on the radio which made me think of this
Slade... oh lord, is it Christmas again?
Question Author
No, but I expect they can`t wait because they can rub their hands at the thought of all the royalties again. Bring out a successful chrismas record and you`re made for life!
Pink Flyod :-)

I like Ultravox as well...Cat Stevens, Rolling Stones, David Bowie....loads and loads...I was born in 73 :-)
For a quite a while now, I've not listened to any music from my 'youth'...
Nor have I but I did get the urge to listen yo 'pass the dutchie'
The daughter tells me off for still playing Zee Zee Top :-(

I listen to Magic 828 radio. They play music of the 60's 70's and 80's. It brings back lots of memories. Not because the music was particularly good, but it reminds you of what you were doing at that time.
We were listening to clips of Hamish Imlach last night - gee, it took me back to the folk clubs in Scotland in the 70s.
''I can start by listening to Barry Manilow and end up 1/2 hour later listening to James Blunt''

Good grief...

Like Boxy, I don't understand the lyrics - what 'they' are singing / saying.
I much prefer the 'older' music.
