I want to LEGALLY download songs, and would like advice on which are the best places to do this. Generally the songs I want will be popular songs which I hear on the radio, so not too obscure.

I would like to download MP3 files, rather than the encrypted iTunes versions. All of my music library from my CDs is MP3, so I’d like to keep it the same.

I have already downloaded one song using ‘play.com’ and it worked well, but the choice doesn’t seem to be that good.

All advice would be appreciated.

Amazon have a surprisingly good range, and tend to match your other specs.

(Full marks for being new and STILL spotting the great iTunes rip-off, by the way!).

Itunes have not "encrypted" their music for some time now (actually it was never encrypted, you mean DRM (digital rights management))

You can buy off of Amazon and as you say Play.

The best site I have found is Spotify which allows you to listen to entire albums before you buy, then if you want to buy they have a company - Digital 7 - that sells. It also keeps your purchases on line for a limited number of downloads so should disater strike all is not lost.

This is my choice it may not be the best out there but I haven't found any where "cheaper" and it does the job.

itunes for me.. Apple ROCK
Apple Rock? Couldn't disagree more
For dance/trance type of stuff I use www.junodownload.com. You can buy the music in lossless FLAC/WAV formats, as well as standard MP3.
