My mate tells me that you can buy a contraption that plugs into the Scarp socket of your tv in the leaving room that means you can see what is being shown on another tv in the house. Does anyone know about this?

The devices are called various things such as tv senders or digi senders, AV senders. It means you can watch your Sky box (or dvd player / recorder) on an upstairs tv without running wires all over the house. Here are a few examples. You could also try Amazon, Currys, Comet, Play.com etc.

Maplins

Argos

be prepared for a less than perfect picture though. if you use the microwave or wireless broadband while you have it on our picture is unwatchable and the noise unbearable. im not saying they are all the same though, but its defo a problem at our house.
