Music Snobbery.
24 Answers
As you may know I am a complete music snob. If I do not like an artist that is pretty much it as far as I am concerned.
I openly admit to not being a great fan of female led music (I like Lily Allen and some 60's chicks, but not much else) and I totally abhor anything MOBO wise or dance orientated.
However, I am totally drawn to Beverley Knight's "The Queen of Starting Over". It is so damn catchy and good, I may even listen to a few more tracks by her.
What singer or song has taken you away from your normal comfort zone?

Also bought the Duffy album this week after swearing on my 30th birthday (a few years ago) that all chart music was pants and bought by youngsters with too much pocket money and not enough taste. Starting to think now that we might have a number one from a singer who isn't just a one-hit wonder.

SRH, I was amazed by the Duffy album, haven't stopped listening to it yet.
Wardy I'm going to go for Take That and that Rule the World song. I used to like Take That when I was wee but my taste completely changed over the years and I don't really like boy band type pop but I must admit I've been quite impressed with their comeback stuff.
And Beverley Knight isn't really my thing either but she has a fantastic voice I think, very underrated.

I discovered Richard hawley recently also....great ,almost retro sound. But this is totally different.....she is a Norwegian(?) Saami singer.....very haunting and beautiful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYevBLUtuLc
I am a pop tart and like things like Kylie, Sugababes and Liberty X. I like Dolly Parton and loads of other country songs. I love Radiohead, Paul Weller, Blur, Take That, PJ Harvey, Prince, Leftfield and Faithless. I like old rockers like The Beatles and The Stones. I love electronic music which can be made up of random bleeps that most other people would think was a complete racket. I like funk, soul and jazz. I like lots of classical (Prlude l'aprs-midi d'un faune is one of my favoutite pieces of music). I
I don't think any type of music is out of my comfort zone really. Except maybe Death Metal.

Oh pastafreak - thank you! Wonderful stuff! It's one to add to my 'must find out more' list. And thanks for backing me up on the Hawley front - one of the great unheralded singers of our generation, methinks. Went all the way to Galway to see him on Valentine's Day (and had a nice drunken chat with him in the smokers corner afterwards, which made my year!)
It's funny the stuff that comes out of Scandanavia. All that black metal crap and then genius little nuggets like the one you've posted and the wonderful Idha, who was a beacon of light in my student days:

Never been one for slushy sentiment (which is probably why I never got Take That etc) but the likes of Hawley and Idha make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

Im no snob as regards music, i like all sorts of stuff but the other week i listened to beethovens moonlight sonata and it blew me away. totally removed from anything i usually listen to. I think i heard it on someones myspace , and although i have heard the music before, it has never had the effect on me that it does now .
Oh Pasta - already love that! And have to admit to getting into fado music a bit recently. Heard Amlia Rodrigues on the radio and bought an album then followed up with more modern fado such as Mariza. And, no, I'm not going off-thread! I'm the first person to turn off when 'world music' comes on Jools Holland - so for me, Portugese folk music is a VERY guilty pleasure!
Oh, and (please don't tell anyone!) I've got the Girls Aloud greatest hits hidden in my knicker drawer - oh, the shame! But The Show is my wake-up-in-the-shower song when I know I've got to kick a**e at work that day! Totally out of my comfort zone! (and something that my musician boyfriend would probably dump me in an instant for if he ever found out!)

Oh Buck, then you probably already know Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah:

Not a guilty pleasure, I know, but couldn't resist posting it up here. Tempted to request it in my will as my 'funeral song' - will get everyone weeping like there's no tomorrow!
