In my folder containing word documents, how come some of the file names are in blue and others are in black? I've read that this has something to do with compression but I've never compressed these files (knowingly anyway). Not problematic - I'm just curious.

It could be that you used a previous document (which was already compressed) as a template for another document, or the template you are using for your documents (the default is called normal.dot) is compressed.

Do a search for files with a .dot extension and see if they show as blue. If so, right click the file, select Properties, look for Attributes then click Advanced. Untick the Compressed tick box.
