Teddy (Theodore) Pendergrass is, for many people, the definitive voice of the Philadelpia Soul sound, thanks to his work as vocalist with Harold Melvin And The Bluenotes. Teddy is the voice on their massive hit 'If You Don't Know Me By Now' and he made a career out of using his passionate vocals on soulful slow ballads. Friction with Melvin led to a parting of the ways, and Teddy embarked on a successful solo career, developing his style a stereotypical 'soul stud' - his image, with shades of Marvin Gaye, was the inspiration behind comedian Lenny Henry's OTT soul/sex god Theophilous P Wildebeeste, with his famous inuendo phrase "I think you know where I'm coming from ladies!"
Tragedy struck Pendergrass in the mid 1980's when a car smash left him a quadroplegic, and virtually ended his stage career.
After years of intensive therapy, with his famous voice intact, Teddy Pendergrass made his first stage appearence earlier this year at the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel in Atlantic City. He plans to rebuild his career, and commence recording again, health permitting.
