I am currently learning to play the guitar and my fingers get a little sore.

I was wondering if anyone had any non-guitar related methods of building up callouses on my fingers so that I can practise these methods whilst I'm in work or elsewhere when a guitar is not available.

don't know if you've seen this page, I thought maybe surgical spirirt would help. Some of these guys seem to have some alternative ideas...
Someone once told me that soaking your fingers in vinegar can help. That and peeing on them, so you take your choice between smelling like a chippy and smelling like a toilet.
meths. drys your skin. my mother swore by it when she was a school cleaner. yes low action helps. if its electric your playing use gauge 10 or 11 strings. anything lighter cuts like cheese wire. lowest action money can buy is on a peavey vandenbergh. you can blow on it to make a tune. try ebay but not newer washburn made ones. should have 24 frets and kahler trem,

Thanks to all the answers.

It looks like I'll just have to practise more harder as I can't really use meths.

But thanks anyways.
you can build up hard skin with surgical spirit - I used to do that to harden my feet for wearing pointe shoes for ballet.
