ah gypsey-eyes, thankfully my traumas re prom dresses are now over as my daughter had hers in May! I posted the exact same question... this wont help but we ended up getting my mum down to stay for a week and made one (it cost 30), fitted my daughter like a glove and looked gorge and we still have it! Hiring is daft as they can cost as much as 150 squid to hire and they very rarely fit exactly and can be quite mucky. I would suggest TKMax if you have one near you or try the web. My daughter spent months looking on the web and found a few that were on sale but she didn't like any of them! Depends on how fussy you are. She is only a size 6 tho and 5ft so it was difficult. How about asking the girls from the previous year if anyone has one to sell? Or if you know a local dressmaker, perhaps it would be worth investigating having one made. The material works out a lot cheaper and patterns vary from 5 to 10 and then you could work out a rate for the dressmaker and you should still get the dress you want, in the colour you want that fits you perfectly cheaper than what you can buy!
Do you have any 'good' second hand shops near you, or any vintage shops?
I don't know where you live, but as an example, there's a shop in Glasgow called Starry, Starry Night, it's full of retro clothes and some gorgeous vintage dresses. I'm sure there'll be something like that near you, and it would be worth a try as there will be loads of unique things, they might just need some hunting out!
other than that i'd suggest ebay, tk maxx, or find some local boutiques. the nice one in bournemouth writes down where you will be wearing your dress, so makes sure no one else going to that event will have the same dress on as you!
have a look in your local paper as in birmingham there are lots of local students with new ideas advertising custom made frocks!
according to your description, I suggest that you can try online-shopping
