Don McLean- American Pie. I think it's difficult to give a reason for something like a favourite song, I guess I just never tire of hearing it, it still sounds as good as when I first heard it. 8 minutes and 27 seconds of musical genius.
My favourite all time song changes almost hourly but at the moment its 'East Bound and Down' by Jerry Reed (better known as the theme to Smokey & the Bandit!!)

But I suppose really its 'An Ending (Ascent) by Brian Eno. It is what heaven would probably sound like - it manages to be both major and minor at the same time. It's perfect.

The ultimate *statement* about music would be John Cage's '4.33'.
Boz scaggs lido shuffle, or andrew gold lonely boy. as stated above, i never tire of hearing them
sara maclaghlan's "angel" songs don't get any more beautiful than that one.
I mind on Mike Batt being sued for sampling "4:33" ...
At the moment its Junkie XLs Beauty Never Fades from the Animatrix soundtrack.
Something about it sends a shiver down my spine even after the hundredth listen.
abelmanmoth, is that Eno one the one that's often used in adverts and TV shows? That sounds like it's entirely made up of ghostly chord changes? It makes me tingly, if it's the one I'm thinking of.

One song - that's tough. It'd be a toss-up between: Beatles, Penny Lane. I've always leant more towards the Macca songs and this one sums up the art of catchy pop-song writing - perfect length, perfect tune, every little change up or down is spot-on - it pushes all the right buttons.

Or - Radiohead, Planet Telex. It's got everything I want in a rock song - great textures, every kind of guitar sound, wonderful dynamics, an economical but odd/baffling lyric, oh man it's just wonderful.

Neenee you sneakily haven't stated yours, despite asking the question.
Iris - goo goo dolls is another good one spook. I went to see sarah mclaghlan and when that song came on I just closed my eyes, you're right its beautiful.
Pink Floyd - Us and Them. The way the song is introduced. The lazy yet beautiful melody. The uplifting Sax solo. The randomly recorded voices of people's thoughts. And of course, the meaningful lyrics.
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Venice Queen. It's kind of a two-parter and both parts sound perfect with beautiful lyrics. Everything is just right.
Foo FIghters - Everlong
It has a fantastic begining and it gets my blood pumping, It just blows me away
Sugar Baby Love by The Rubettes A classic 70's Fun Song
feeder - just a day
its the perfect song for when you just want to freak out in your house !

havent people on here got unusual tastes ? nothing wrong with that at all but just surprising that no-one lists a stereotypical 'best ever' song eg queen or led zep to name but two
Well, I picked a Beatles one - they're probably the most predictable choice on here yet! American Pie was someone else's choice, that's more a "classic" than most of the choices here.
another fav' of mine, that i keep bouncing to and from is pink floydd's " comfortably numb" the orchestration in it ,is fab and what about the guitar riff s. MAGIC.
The beatles - i am the walrus cos it is so great and no other song is like and in 100 years time it will sound as good as it did way back in the 67
My favourite has to be "Robot" by "Tatu" , because... dont know!
What a great question! Bound to get everyone talking.

Mine would have to be, at the moment, Hotel California by the Eagles. Iris by Goo Goo Dolls is also brilliant though (Not entirely sure why, it's quite simple. It just gets to you I guess!) Hotel California, because it reminds me of someone ;-) AND it's fun to play at full volume out of my window in the heatwave!

Although, this time last year I would have said Find the River by REM, the lyrics are just so beautiful and it just said everything I felt at the time.
At the moment, its America by Razorlight, what a song.

All time favorite is very hard, but maybe Queen's Thing called love or Eye of the tiger by survivor...
drops of jupiter by train. it's got everything. good lyrics, great tune and sing-a-long chorus
